The NBA is a spectacle of little comparison, with around 5.47 million average viewers in the 2023 Playoffs, the highest since 2019. The league’s increase in popularity has been driven by new fans from China, India, and the Middle East. With many seeking alternate ways to engage with their beloved sport, betting has now taken up an increasingly important role.

As it happens, some have abused this system for their own gain. An idea reiterated by the betting scandal currently engulfing LeBron James’ longtime friend and manager, Maverick Carter.

On 30th November, The Washington Post broke the news about Maverick Carter’s involvement in illegal betting on NBA games. Previously, in a November 2021 interview with federal law enforcement agents, Carter confessed to his association with an individual, Wayne Nix. Since then, Nix has pleaded guilty to charges related to his involvement in operating an offshore sports betting ring.

Despite the legalization of sports betting now, in 2021, betting on games was still prohibited due to the PASPA Act. The Supreme Court, however, struck down the PASPA Act, granting individual states the authority to establish their regulations on betting.

Assuming the role of LeBron’s manager in 2003, Maverick Carter played a pivotal role in the NBA star’s financial ascent to a billion-dollar valuation. Carter, as the CEO of LRMR Management company established with LeBron and Rich Paul, has significantly prospered from this association. His various business ventures have contributed to him amassing a personal net worth of $60 million. However, his involvement in illegal betting has jeopardized his relationship with King James.

Due to his close relationship with Maverick Carter, many wanted to hear what LeBron had to say about the scandal. Speaking about the matter, James said, “Maverick’s his own man and at the end of the day, gambling is legal. I mean, you can go on your phone and do whatever you want. And he has no affiliation with the NBA or NFL, so he can do what he wants to do.”
