Is Mark Cuban right? Would Klay Thompson thrive more in Dallas than under Steve Kerr's system?

Seeing Klay Thompson in a uniform other than the Warriors’ is going to be a strange sight for every hoops fan. But that’s the new reality we live in after he signed a three-year $50 million deal to join the Luka Doncic-led side. Although he might no longer be in his prime, the Splash Brother could play a major part in the Mavs’ lingering title pursuit. Minority owner Mark Cuban detailed how the sharpshooter’s life will be a lot different in Dallas compared to the brand of basketball he is used to playing with the Warriors.

Cuban revealed the factors Klay Thompson brings to the table for the Mavs are the same factors they struggled against Celtics, “If you look back in the finals, you know there were times when we couldn’t score. It was more just hitting open threes than anything else and obviously, the big addition was Klay.” Being a career 41.3% shooter from deep range and one-half of arguably the greatest shooting duo ever, China Klay should have no real problem sinking the ball in the basket, whenever Luka and Kyrie dish it to him.

The billionaire then pointed out the key difference between Steve Kerr’s system and their own, “At Golden State, he had to always be on the move. They had that motion offense where he was always coming off screens and running. You know, we don’t do that.” With their game relying heavily on three-pointers, the Warriors had a lot of set actions to get Steph and Klay open, which required them to exert a lot of energy with constant movement.

But in Dallas, Klay’s only focus would be to make his open threes as Mark Cuban remarked on the Roommates Show, “Just standing in the corner and standing in the wings, just catch and shoot from Luka and Ky, hopefully, his life is gonna be a lot easier.” So, while it is quite visible that the minority owner loves the new veteran addition to the roster, how’s the player feeling?

Klay Thompson expects the change of scenery to do wonders for his career

Well, Klay’s final season with the Warriors did not end the way he would have wanted it to. Unlike what fans are used to seeing, he struggled heavily and averaged only 17.9 points, his lowest since sophomore season. Then, he went scoreless in the final game of the year, which he was massively trolled for by the fans. With his career at a low point, he believed change was required to get back on track.

During the Mavs’ introductory press conference, Klay said, “I’m very grateful for my time in Golden State, but I just felt like you know moving on could just re-energize me and do something special for the rest of my career.”

Have an interesting take?

But why Dallas? Coming off a dominant run to the Finals, the team’s youth, the style of play, and the way Mark Cuban and his crew treat their players impressed Klay. The sharpshooter wanted to be a part of this environment!

“They looked like they have fun playing with each other and play for each other and that was very attractive to me,” China Klay revealed. With the Mavs getting exactly what they needed by adding Klay and him getting the change that he was craving, it could be a win-win situation for both parties. Do you think they can translate it to winning a Championship next season?
