The Rockets vs Mavericks game had a surprise element when Dirk Nowitzki took control of the commentary booth. The former Mavs legend was quite the presence tonight, encouraging his alma mater’s young blood. And Luka Doncic happened to be the one who got the complete attention.

Known for taking the most absurd shots, Doncic seems to be following the path of Brad Davis. He was widely known for being a “horse player”.

The hilarious commentary by Nowitzki took on a different level when Luka made a shot that wouldn’t be considered normal. “He’s probably the best horse player I’ve ever seen. Outside of Brad Davis… Luka has got to best horse player I’ve ever seen. He is making some straight gar-bagé,” he said.

It goes without saying that Doncic’s trick shots are all the rage. Multiple articles and videos have been published on some of the wildest shots anyone has ever seen. So, it’s not surprising that Dirk would call him the best “horseplayer” he’s ever seen. But it would be the first anyone called it “straight gar-bagé“. Compliment and insult in the same breath.

The NBA world was treated to his rare skills just months after he was drafted. In the 4th quarter against the Trail Blazers in 2018, Doncic hit a one-handed 3-pointer with just 0.6 seconds left on the clock.

His mixing of soccer tricks into basketball is also another example of his more circus shot-making. Over the years, we have seen him with a wide bag of tricks. While sitting, from behind the backboard, ceiling shots, and many more. So Luka might just take Nowitzki’s remarks in his stride.

Nowitzki and Doncic are quite impressed with each other

The Mavs legend and the current franchise star have only played a year together in Dallas. But that was enough for both of them to understand each other. Talking about the impression a young Doncic had made on him, Dirk Nowitzki was in no shortage of words.

During the EuroBasket 2022 press conference, Dirk reminisced about his time playing with Doncic. He said, “I have been super impressed. From day one, he came in just reading the game, his basketball IQ is just on another level.” For a legendary player like Nowitzki to say this is a great honor. But if we look at his international stats, the skills Dirk mentions are not surprising at all.

The 2017 EuroLeague MVP and also named All-EuroLeague First-Team, Luka had led Real Madrid to the Liga ACB championship. He was averaging 16.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.3 assists. It had already set the stage for his NBA career.

Doncic, for his part, had mentioned his appreciation of Nowitzki after their win against Orlando Magic on November 7th. “The things he has done for Dallas are unbelievable, not just as a player but as a person he did a lot. “I think he should be a role model for every player in the league,” Luka said.

Clearly, the two have great respect for each other. Hopefully, tonight’s comments do not put a hamper on that.
