Lonnie Walker to the Celtics—Is this the ultimate betrayal for Lakers fans?

The Celtics seem to have plans to repeat their Championship season. While it wouldn’t be unattainable, the path is certainly going to be tougher than last season. And perhaps that’s why the Cs decided to add more depth. Free agent Lonnie Walker, who played for the Nets up until now, has taken his talents to another star-laden team. Shams Charania of The Athletic divulged the unprecedented move to Boston. And while it caused quite the joy for ‘Beantown,’ the same cannot be said of the Lakers fans. Why them, you ask? Why not?

You possibly couldn’t have forgotten how the 25-year-old guard has come up big for the Purple & Gold in crucial situations, now could you? And given their current scenario, most notably the shooting struggles, having a career 35.6% three-point shooter is not going to hurt! Take a look at what the Lakers insider, Anthony F. Irwin said of the new partnership. “Seeing him in that uniform is going to make me physically ill.” Definitely upset, isn’t it?

As per Charania, Walker signed an Exhibit 10 contract. Hence, even if the former Miami Hurricane product was waived at the end of training camp, Boston will be able to give him a bonus and play for their G League affiliate. The 2018 No. 18 pick was drafted by the Spurs, playing just 17 games for them owing to a meniscus tear. In the four seasons with them, he averaged 9.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists.

However, in his last season with the Nets, Lonnie had a smidgen under 10 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists, and shot 38.4% from downtown. So, yes, for the Celtics, Walker would be a great value addition. With the kind of offensive firepower they possess, he might not find a place in the starting lineup, but Lonnie Walker is sure to provide a major spark off the bench.

But our LA fans and basically everyone not a Celtic just can’t seem to get over this development in the East.

Have an interesting take?

A Laker fan seems to have his heart broken with the news of Lonnie Walker. While he had a decent season with the Purple & Gold in 2022-23, the young guard had turned into a hero overnight with them. Perhaps that’s why this guy went, Noooo not Lonnie, gonna hate seeing him in green,” followed by a crying emoji. Clearly, Walker’s efforts, despite the short stint, had garnered him at least quite a few fans in the Lakers community.

And this next one also falls in the same category. “Remember that time Lonnie beat the Warriors?” Trevor Lane of Lakers Nation wrote! How could anyone forget that? It was a groundbreaking moment in NBA history. Yes, everyone knows that Lonnie Walker shoots great from the three. But to get one over the greatest shooter and make one of the greatest comebacks was certainly the highlight of the new Celt’s career.

Los Angeles was leading the series with a 2-1 record at the time. And the Warriors looked poised to even the score in Game 4. And given the way the game was progressing, it looked like Steph Curry and Co. would come out the winners. But the 2017 Mc.D’s All-American, who was relatively quiet, explosively went off in the fourth, scoring 15 points, effectively putting up his team for good.

A college basketball enthusiast and a retired D1 athlete, this next user has quite a sarcastic comment. “Celtics are great shape to repeat! Just need Embid, Giannis, Dame, Butler, and the entire Knicks team to get hurt again.” This was one of the critiques against Boston throughout their scorching advance to the NBA Finals. While it’s true that key pieces of the Bucks, Heat, Sixers, and Knicks were injured, it hadn’t affected their performance.

And even if they cruised to the Finals, per this individual, their final opponent, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving-led Mavs were by no means easy. If we look at the result per the above logic, Boston should ideally have been defeated by Dallas. Seeing as that wasn’t the case, it’s a point that’s very well up for debate, we suppose.

Finally, SB Nation’s senior WNBA writer, Noa Dalzell, had a creative take on the whole free agent signing business. “The Celtics’ incredible summer continues. Lonnie Walker IV is the last person I expected to get the 15th roster spot, but here we are. Probably the most intriguing free agent in the field. Brad Stevens!” Just another one of Stevens’ intuitive moves. Brad Magic, as they say, yeah?
