Jayson Tatum's Tonight Show antics—Is he the most entertaining player in the NBA right now?

Last month, NBA fans were stunned to see Jaylen Brown holding the microphone instead of basketball. Not many knew that the swingman had rapping as a hobby mentioned in his resume. This came right after his infamous online war with Nike. His track has been speculated to be a diss toward the sneaker giants. Impressed by Brown’s bold move, his closest Celtics teammate, Jayson Tatum, has followed the same footsteps.

On “The Tonight Show”, when the audience was enjoying host Jimmy Fallon’s rhapsodic effort, the curtain from the back unveiled Tatum wrapped in olive colors. The crowd cheered as Fallon introduced him. Then the host looked slightly surprised and asked him the purpose of his visit. Tatum asked for the mic to reveal that his new book was better than Fallon’s. Then the hooper asked the musicians to “drop the beat” and brought to the world a rap. The two performed a fun rap battle, but it was Tatum who ended the rap with the most classic lines. Before dropping the mic Tatum rapped, “Yeah, I think our beef is settled got my first ring and another gold medal.”

The video soon surfaced on X and reached the NBA fans on every corner. Seeing Tatum’s new avatar, the fans rushed to the comment section to express their views.

Fans react to Jayson Tatum’s viral mic drop moment

Jayson Tatum appeared on the show to promote his new book “Baby Dunks-a-Lot”. Much like the Boston ace’s story, the book, co-authored by Sam Apple and illustrated by Parker-Nia Gordon, revolves around a baby, having incredible dunking talent, who becomes a star in the league. To endorse the book, the 26-year-old used a different marketing technique to grab a lot of attention from the fans. It certainly worked, but more than positive reviews, it went south.

No sooner had the Celtics Insider, Taylor Snow shared the clip on X than it caught the eyes of the NBA fans. Unhappy with Tatum’s rap, a fan wrote, “He is ruining all our work to build up his aura with this s**t” and further added, “make it stop”.

Have an interesting take?

While another felt after what Tatum showed on the stage, it would be “So hard for me to defend this ni**a man.” Their sarcastic comment was followed by a laughing emoji. Tatum’s popularity in Boston is unquestionable, but his rapping skills even left the ardent of fans in a sticky spot.

However, one came in support, calling Tatum’s rap “better than Brown’s rap video.” His teammate’s track “Just Do It” didn’t seem to work for this fan. Brown had accused Nike on social media for his snub from Team USA in the Paris Olympics, which led to a lot of controversial views. However, it didn’t help Brown’s case. On the flip side, Tatum got to be a part of the star-studded team and win his second gold medal in the Olympics.

Where someone pleaded it to be hidden from the league’s official social media handle. Emphasizing the request, the fan stated, “Please please please for the love of god do not let nba Twitter see this.” Tatum is already one of the faces of the league leading into an era that will soon be without the likes of LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry. Hence, the face value of Tatum will be higher than ever for the NBA. While they can promote the game with Tatum, promoting his rap is probably not the best idea according to the fans.

Another fan seemed to second the opinion. “Scrub this from the interwebs” was the comment. But we all know that once it reaches the cruel platform, it stays on forever, at least on people’s mind’s.

However, Tatum appeared to have enjoyed bringing something new to the table. Besides putting a foot on the music world, he entered the literature world, too. So his retirement plans are pretty clear now. If you still have doubts, go check out his new book, which is in stores now.
