Recently, Stephen Curry‘s remarks about considering himself the greatest point guard of all time stirred a massive debate. With Michael Jordan opposing the Warriors guard’s comment, the discussion became more glorified. A former Golden State Warriors player supported the 35-year-old soon after that, using his biggest rival as an example.

The former star compared the competitor with legends, such as Magic Johnson and Jordan, to establish his point of view. This has now fueled the argument even more.

How did Michael Jordan help the debate gain momentum?

Since the Splash Brother’s comments, numerous NBA personalities have supported the 9-time All-Star, one of them being Stephen A. Smith. Upon doing so, he reportedly received a text from Michael Jordan regarding his take on the debate. “Magic Johnson is easily the best point guard of all time,” he wrote in the message. The six-time champion justified his statement, mentioning how the Los Angeles Lakers legend invented the triple-double and had one more ring than the Warriors talisman.

Jordan’s logic did not sit straight with the former Warrior Gilbert Arenas, whose question caused the debate to begin. The 3-time All-Star used the example of LeBron James, the arch-rival of Stephen, to point out the flaws in Black Cat’s belief. Highlighting that LeBron often led his teams in assists, Gilbert said, “He has to be the best point guard of all time”.

“Coming to the NBA, he was Magic Johnson with Jordan-like jumping ability,” he added to further prove how the numbers often do not reveal the entire story. He gave his flowers to the Lakers star while contradicting MJ’s comments. This now begs a question.

Who truly is the greatest point guard of all time?

The names of Magic and Stephen come across as the frontrunners in this argument. On one hand, Johnson saved the NBA and created the pathway for the current stars like Curry. On the other hand, the Dubs Nation star entered the league as an underrated prospect and changed the game forever.

So, the impact of both of them is undeniable. They are amongst the most influential basketball players of all time. Both of their legacies transcend their own era and influence millions beyond.
