Is Luka Doncic's weight gain a sign of trouble for the Mavericks this season?

Luka Dončić has faced weight gain allegations, with recent claims saying he reached 280 lbs following the Night of the Dragon charity event. Even though a new photo popped up showing him looking slimmer, people are still scratching their heads about whether the weight gain talk is legit. With this fresh info coming out, fans are starting to stress out again.

New data shows Luka Dončić’s dunks have dropped off big time since his rookie season. He went from 25 dunks in 2018-19 to just 2 in 2023-24. It’s clear Luka’s put on some weight since then, and it looks like it’s affecting his athleticism. Even though Luka’s game isn’t all about jumping high, the weight gain might be why his dunk numbers have tanked, and fans are definitely starting to worry.

Even though his weight gain might’ve messed with his dunk numbers, it hasn’t thrown off his game overall, at least up to last season. Luka Dončić has actually stepped up defensively this season, showing major improvement compared to any other time in his career—stats and the eye test both back this up. Even with the extra weight, his defensive skills have gotten better, and his offense is still on point—he was more efficient last season than ever before.

Yes, he was 230 lbs in his rookie season, but if gaining weight has only made his overall game better, is that really a problem? Fans might need to relax and take a breather because Luka knows what he’s doing. He didn’t become one of the top players in the world’s toughest league by chance. So, there might be another reason for the drop in his dunk numbers.

“Looked pretty normal” – Insider shut down Luka Dončić weight gain allegations

Insider Marc Stein recently tackled the weight gain rumors swirling around Luka Dončić, saying they might be off the mark.Stein said, “Look, I know everybody is gonna get all obsessed about screen caps and freeze frames… screen caps and freeze frames are not always kind.” suggesting the viral pics might not accurately reflect Luka’s current shape.

“I saw him in normal clothes, in street clothes on Friday night and he looked pretty normal to me,” Stein said. Stein also claimed that Luka will be preparing hard for the upcoming season. We know that Luka and the Mavs lost the finals to Celtics. Luka is also yet to receive an MVP. So, going forward, a championship and the coveted MVP trophy would likely be on the top of Luka’s priorities. In this respect, Stein said, “He is just now going to begin, I think, the serious training regimen part of his off-season… the process kind of begins now.”
