Luka Doncic definitely had a season to remember. The first half was marred by injuries, and just when he was about to make his big comeback after a long break, everything changed. From being a Maverick, he became a Laker. After six years as the face of Dallas, the Slovenian sensation found himself in an entirely new city, with a new chapter. Nevertheless, LA opened its arms wide, ready to embrace him as their own. But did he? In a recent interaction with a fan, Doncic shed some light on his future with the Lakers.
A clip has been making the rounds on X, showing an excited Lakers fan chatting with Doncic. The fan just wanted to make sure Luka felt welcome in the city, something the 25-year-old really “appreciated.” While talking, the fan pointed out that, after quite some time, the franchise finally had something big to look forward to, all thanks to Doncic’s arrival. They made it clear that the whole Laker Nation was beyond excited to have him on board.
“Seeing you be able to come in and hopefully be here for a long time, I think you can come in and win a lot of games,” the fan said. Doncic humbly responded, “For Sure.” They even went on to suggest that Luka might even get a statue with the Purple and Gold someday if he continues his brilliance. Doncic smiled and said, “Hopefully.”

That certainly means Doncic might be seriously considering the Lakers’ $165 million extension plan. According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the newbie could sign a lucrative 3-year contract with the franchise, locking him in until the 2028-29 season, along with a player option. Moreover, if he opts out after that season, he’d be eligible for a super-max deal with the organization, as he would mark a decade in the league. Then the starting salary for that season could be $72 million, as the insider highlighted.
It’s not just the fans who are excited to have Luka Doncic on the team, even Jeanie Buss made an emotional confession that reveals her deep sentiment behind the trade.

“I remember the last time I saw Kobe alive—about a month before he passed,” Buss shared. “He had brought Gigi to a Lakers game to see Luka play because Luka was Gigi’s favorite player. The idea that Luka is now a Laker—I know how happy that would have made Kobe and Gigi.” But there was a point when Buss couldn’t have seen a possibility of landing an outstanding talent as Doncic to the squad.
“There are certain players in the league that you think, ‘There’s no way I’ll ever have that player on my team,” she disclosed. The reason? Buss explained, “Unless you draft a star like that, they usually don’t move.” Doncic, being the Mavericks’ franchise player, was exactly the type of talent that doesn’t typically get traded, given his potential and impact on the game. But the Mavs had other plans.
Buss also clarified that trading Davis was not on the table. “When the opportunity came up, we were not looking to move Anthony Davis,” she stated. But turned out, the Mavericks had different plans. “You have to remember we had the piece that they wanted, which was Anthony Davis, and that’s why they came to us, that’s why the conversation started,” she added.

The trade got messy, but in the end, both teams got what they wanted. And after Dincic’s conversation with the fan, it seems like he’s starting to settle in mentally as well. So now, all eyes are on the upcoming months to see if the chemistry between LeBron James and Luka Doncic works as smoothly as it did with Anthony Davis.
