The Dallas Mavericks absolutely decimated the bottom-seeded Detroit Pistons in tonight’s game. Luka Doncic and Co. dominated the Pistons from start to finish and blew them out 142-124. Luka Doncic continued his hot streak and had another impressive performance. He wreaked havoc on the Pistons defense and finished with 39 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. Not only did Doncic’s triple-double performance help the Mavs win, but it also set new NBA records.
With an unbelievable 39/10/10 stat line, Luka secured his NBA record sixth straight 30-point triple-double. He also had an NBA record fifth-straight 35-point triple-double. Luka has shifted gears since returning from the All-Star break. In the last 9 games, Luka is averaging a whopping 37.4 points, 11.1 assists, and 10 rebounds.
There it is: Doncic has his NBA-record sixth straight 30-point triple-double — and NBA-record fifth straight 35-point triple-double.

Tonight’s performance will certainly push Luka in the MVP rankings. With Joel Embiid ineligible for the regular season awards due to the 65-game rule, the MVP race is wide open. Nikola Jokic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are currently the frontrunners to win the prestigious award. But that could change in the final stretch of the regular season. Luka is leading the league in scoring average with 34.7 points per game. And he has been averaging a triple-double since the All-Star break.

Statistically, Luka is having an MVP-caliber season and is arguably the best offensive player in the NBA right now. However, one glaring problem has hurt Luka’s MVP candidature all season.
Luka Doncic might not win the MVP award because of this
Even though Luka has wreaked havoc on the league all season, he is nowhere close to leading the MVP race. That is because the Dallas Mavericks have not been able to win many games despite Luka’s incredible form. The Mavs improved to a 36-28 record after tonight’s win. But they are still stuck at the 8th spot in the Western Conference standings. And they might fall even further in the standings with the Lakers and the Warriors lurking behind. While Luka is averaging a triple-double since the All-Star break, the Mavs have won only 4 of those 9 games.

Meanwhile, other MVP candidates like Jokic and SGA have led their respective teams to the top spots in the Western Conference standings. With multiple superstars having historic seasons, voters will consider their regular season record before casting their votes. That will be a major drawback in Luka’s resume as he is stuck in the play-in situation despite having a career year. Do you think Luka Doncic should be higher in the MVP race despite the Mavs’ underwhelming record?
