The Mavs didn’t just go 3-0 up in the series but also performed postseason magic. The magicians? Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. While the duo had their share of naysayers, they seem to have squashed it all with a historic stat. Tonight, in Game 3 against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Doncic and Irving dropped 33 points each to orchestrate a comfortable 116-107 win. And it was enough for them to find a place in history.

As per ESPN stat info, Kyrie and Luka became the first starting backcourt in 50 years to drop at least 30 points each in three games during the postseason. Impressed with the historic stat, the NBA world including stars like Ja Morant, DeMar DeRozan, Josh Hart, and many others lauded the duo.

The NBA world has witnessed plenty of star backcourt duos. The recent duo to dominate the league were Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Importantly, the GSW duo went on to win four rings against their names in their historic run. While the Splash Brothers’ union is still doubtful for the upcoming season, the NBA world witnessed the rise of the next star backcourt duo.

When Kyrie Irving joined the Mavs fold, midway through the last season, many questioned the decision and expected the union to fail. Unfortunately, the team failed to even qualify for the postseason. However, in the current season, Kai and Luka Doncic have found an unreal connection, and it’s evidently visible on the court and on the stat sheet as well. For instance, after eliminating the OKC Thunder in the semi-final series, Luka and Kyrie had a tear-jerking emotional moment in the center of the court, hugging each other.

Following that, the duo has come a long way, averaging 28.3 points (Luka) and 22.4 points (Kyrie) in the postseason. They are just a win away from playing their first Finals together. Hopefully, a fresh start to a new dynasty.

While the fans of the sport flooded the social media comments with their praises, stars from the league also joined them. Especially, the backcourt stars themselves joined the party to acknowledge the brilliance of the duo. Before the Steph-Klay era, Tim Duncan-led San Antonio Spurs also had a star backcourt duo. It was Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. They have added four rings to the franchise with their service from the backcourt.

Manu Ginobili recognized the wizardry in the Mavs team, and wrote“Luka is unreal! Perfect alley oop pass while falling and with the left…” Following him, the NY Knicks guard Josh Hart wrote“The best closing backcourt you’ll see.” Importantly, the rising superstar guard Ja Morant also joined the bandwagon to praise the duo.

Even the frontcourt players couldn’t restrict themselves from praising the duo. The Orlando Magic sophomore star Paolo Banchero, who also had an impressive season called the duo, “11 & 77 professional closers,” via his X handle. Rightly said, it’s not only about the shooting and orchestrating ability of the duo but the ability to remain calm during the clutch. Apart from Banchero, DeMar DeRozan also praised the duo by just mentioning their name in a post.

Apart from the active players, former star Kendrick Perkins dropped his take on the game. In fact, he considered Kyrie Irving as a fortune to the country, as he wrote“Kyrie Irving. Gold Bless America.” Leaving the historic feat aside, the Mavs are just a win away from the NBA Finals. Will the duo make it to the Finals? or will the Wolves make a historic comeback?
