Home/Olympics

There’s always time for your first. Be it trying anything new or winning a gold medal in the Olympics. The latter is the case for Novak Djokovic as the Serbian secured gold after beating Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles tennis. At 37 and after 24 grand slams, Djokovic is still at the top of the tennis mountain and is adding some more to his legend. Is he the GOAT in tennis? Luka Doncic believes so.

Not only Luka, but even LeBron James is also a firm believer in Djokovic supremacy. If there was anyone who could be seen as the 4-time US Open winner’s parallel in the NBA, then LeBron would’ve been the one, both in terms of longevity and greatness. So it was only fitting for the Lakers ace to send his congratulatory message to Djokovic following his historic triumph.

After Djokovic’s win in Paris, Luka Doncic took to social media to congratulate the Serb. He shared a post on his IG story and captioned it with three goat emojis. The post from Tennis TV read DJOKOVIC ACHIEVES THE OLYMPICS DREAM 🥇 Novak Djokovic defeats Alcaraz to win the Olympics Singles Gold Medal!!” In the thrilling contest, Djokovic defeated the Spaniard 7-6, 7-6 to win his maiden gold medal in the Olympics. He also commented on Djokovic’s post following the win where the Serbian penned a touching message for his country. “Dear Serbia, We did it. Love, Nole,” wrote the tennis icon. Doncic commented with the goat emojis again and LeBron James also followed suit. He wrote, “Congrats brother!!”, followed by multiple clapping emojis.

Russell Westbrook also entered the chat and shared his message for Nole. The new Nuggets guard wrote, “Congratulations brother!!!!!”, followed by fire emojis. Westbrook incidentally will play alongside another of Serbia’s favorite sons, Nikola Jokic. After being traded to the Jazz, the former MVP’s contract was bought out. He signed a 2-year $6.8 million deal with the Denver side to strengthen their bench.

While LeBron James is dreaming of an Olympic gold medal with Team USA, Luka Doncic was unable to fulfill his Olympic goal after crashing out to Greece in the qualifiers. It has been a rough few months for Doncic. The MVP contender steered the Mavs to the NBA Finals, hoping to end a 13-year drought. But the Celtics proved to be too big a task for Doncic to overcome. The elimination at the hands of Greece just after that didn’t help much as the Slovenian is focusing on next season. While he celebrates Djokovic’s win, it is to be noted that this is not the first time Doncic provided his take on tennis’ GOAT debate.

Luka Doncic channeled his inner Novak Djokovic fanboy multiple times

Apart from his love for basketball, Luka Doncic harbours a tremendous passion for soccer and tennis. His friendship with Djokovic’s fellow countryman, Nikola Jokic, is well-documented and so is his admiration for the tennis legend. After Djokovic surpassed Rafael Nadal by winning his 23rd grand slam at Roland Garros last year, Doncic did the same. His congratulatory message had a similar theme to it as he posted multiple goat emojis to make his feelings clear.

The respect between the two was mutual as Djokovic also complemented Doncic’s on-court heroics. After the 5-time NBA All-Star recorded the first-ever 60-point, 20-rebound triple-double in the history of the league in 2022 against the Knicks, Djoker reacted to the feat via his IG account. Djokovic wrote in his story, “Auuuu brate, Svaka cast,” which translates to “oh brother, well done.”

Luka Doncic can look forward to the next season as the Dallas side have already made a major upgrade to their roster by signing Klay Thompson. After forming one of the most potent backcourts in the league alongside Kyrie Irving last season, Klay’s shooting prowess will only boost their chances of getting over the line. And this absence from the Olympics will probably do him the world of good as Doncic will be focused and physically ready for another championship chase.
