From Slovenia to Spain to Dallas and now to Los Angeles, Luka Doncic has travelled miles. He’s the kind of athlete who makes everyone say ‘generation talent’ unanimously. And interestingly enough, Doncic is just 26 and has a long tenure in the NBA. Who knows, he could be making his way to the GOAT debate in the future? However, moving from the Mavericks to the Lakers earlier in February 2025, the Slovenian Sensation walked in with some nervousness.

Speaking on Sundae Conversation with Caleb Pressley, Luka Doncic shared his concern with the host. Playing at Staples Center (now Crypto.com Arena) is an experience in itself. Hollywood glitz and glam with celebrities swarming the courtside. Pressley gave the 5x All-Star three celebrities to choose from. Who makes Luka nervous? Leonard DiCaprio, Kim Kardashian, or Bronny James?

“Bronny James, because he’s usually on the bench, so I’m nervous,” Doncic confessed. LeBron James Jr., the name that echoes in the NBA world, but with doubtful eyes and critical thoughts. The 20-year-old guard, son of the LeBron James, debuted in the league with hope in his heart. But, two games later, some things concerning one were clear. James Jr. needs more time and training to play for the Lakers. Moved to the G League, the rookie has found himself on the bench for LA than on the court.

What could be the possible reasons for Luka Doncic‘s nervousness? He could meet the same fate as James Jr. That’s it, that is the only fear that a star like Luka should have. But he worries about more than that. Shifting from Texas to California has burned holes in his wallet. Not approved!

Luka Doncic doesn’t plan on going back to Texas despite losing $22.7 million

Luka Doncic has adapted to the celebrity lifestyle and enjoys living in Los Angeles. But this fondness isn’t protecting his pockets. Florida has no state tax; however, California has the highest state tax. “Oh, I know,” Doncic responded. Of course, he knows. He knows it better than anyone else. Now, a question arises, and that is: Will Luka ever go back to Texas after retirement? Doesn’t have to be Dallas, though!

“No,” Luka replied without a moment’s hesitation. By leaving the Dallas Mavericks for the Los Angeles Lakers, Luka Doncic made more than just a career move — he walked into California’s high-tax system. His five-year, $215 million contract now comes with a heavy price. With an annual salary of $43 million, he will pay an estimated $5.8 million in California state taxes alone.

Moreover, federal taxes, Medicare, and other deductions drive his total tax burden up to $22.7 million per year, slashing over 52% of his income. Had Luka stayed in Texas, the story would have been far different. Texas, with no state income tax, would have allowed him to save millions. Instead, more than half of his $43 million salary now disappears before it even touches his hands — a costly trade-off for the bright lights of Los Angeles.
