Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic faced a lot of criticism after his team failed to make the playoffs last season. On the other hand, acquiring Kyrie Irving backfired completely. Although they became strong offensively, their defense weakened significantly. Before the start of the new season, the Mavs made some significant moves in the off-season, as they signed some valuable players. Meanwhile, as per the latest report, they are about to sign another important piece of the puzzle, which could help them win a championship.

It is worth mentioning that the Mavs re-signed Irving on a 3-year deal. On the other hand, they have also traded for Grant Williams from the Boston Celtics, which could help both their defense and offense. Now, another important addition is reportedly on the way, which could be a massive boost for Doncic and Irving.

As per ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, The Mavs are planning to hire Eric Hughes as their new assistant coach. Hughes was involved with the Philadelphia 76ers team for the past four seasons. In 2019, he joined Brett Brown’s coaching staff in a player development role. Then, he got promoted to assistant coach when Doc Rivers became the Sixers’ coach in 2021. Although the duo of Rivers and Hughes failed the Sixers to win their 4th title, they certainly made progress from the previous seasons.

Mavs’ current coach, Jason Kidd, also has a history with Hughes. Previously, Hughes worked with Kidd during his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Milwaukee Bucks; hence, they already have a great understanding of each other.

In addition, the Dallas team had to recruit new coaching staff since they let go of their lead assistant Greg St. Jean, shooting coach Peter Patton, and assistant Quinton Crawford. After that, they hired former Utah Jazz assistant Alex Jensen and former Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Josh Broghamer as assistant coaches.

Certainly, Hughes’ addition will add massive value to their coaching staff.

Safe to say, Doncic will have some new faces on the roster. He has already shown his individual talent in the past few seasons, after taking his team to a Conference Finals in 2022. In the upcoming season, he will be looking forward to doing the same, with the help of the 2016 NBA champion, Kyrie Irving.
