While the ‘trade deadline D’Lo’ might be history, the 28-year-old guard is continuing building on a great season. As the Los Angeles Lakers battled against the Philadelphia 76ers, the first quarter saw D’Angelo Russell pitting his name in the franchise records. Within his first 9 minutes of the game, the lefty shooter sank multiple triples to mark the most threes in Lakers history within a campaign. D’Angelo’s feat came enroute to give the Lakers a 15-16 lead near midway to the quarter.

D’Angelo Russell, in a true Laker fashion, continues to defy the odds. The guard suffered a cold streak earlier in the season, making his way to the bench. However, as rumors of his trade gained momentum near early February, the guard went on a hot streak, solidifying his stature within the team and regaining his starting role.

Russell’s feat comes at the 184th three of the season, 29 years after its culmination. Previously, the record was held by Nick Van Exel’s 183 three pointers in the 1994-95 NBA season. Nick played 80 games for the Lakers that season, averaging 36.8 minutes per game. Moreover, despite the decreased usage of the 3 point line in that era, Van Exel was a regular from the arc, mounting 6.4 threes per game (D’Angelo Russell attempts 6.8 threes per game this season).

Shifting to the third spot in the franchise record list is Kobe Bryant. The Black Mamba made 180 threes during the season marked with his MVP controversy, 2005-06. He attempted 6.4 threes during his heavy 41 minutes on the court each game while leading the league in scoring. The preceding names on the list fall below the 180 threes on their season, harboring names like Chucky Atkins (176), Malik Monk (173), Nick Young (170), Jodie Meeks (162) and LeBron James (161).

Can D’Angelo Russell touch 200 threes this season?

Currently, as the last leg of the season goes on, 8 players have touched the 200 three point mark. The top 3 features the splash bros, with Luka Doncic holding the 2nd spot. While D’Angelo Russell maintains a firm grip on his shot, attempting 6.4 shots per game, connecting on 42.4% of them.

Moreover, the Lakers have 12 remaining games in the regular season. Even with a slight dip in his efficiency of hitting nearly 3 threes per game, Russell can cross the 200 three point mark this season. While D’Lo will become the first Laker to do so, it will be his second such feat. D’Angelo Russell’s most productive season beyond the arc came in 2018-19 with the Brooklyn Nets, where he sank 234 threes within 81 games.
