It has been more than a week since JJ Redick officially joined the Los Angeles Lakers for the head coach role. However, Redick was the first one to enter the coaching department of the Lakers on June 24, as Rob Pelinka fired the whole coaching staff in May this year. That’s why Redick will need to hire a new assistant coach along with other supporting staff to guide the team on new paths. Reportedly, the biggest aim for the front office is to find experienced assists to join Redick on the coaching staff. Redick prefers perfection and someone who knows the game, matching his strategic acuteness.

According to reports from Brad Turner of the LA Times, the Lakers have “interest in former NBA coach Alvin Gentry to join JJ Redick’s coaching staff.” No doubt Gentry is considered for the role. He was there with the Golden State Warriors as an associate head coach during the 2014-15 season. We all know how the Dubs scored a 4-2 win over the Cavs that year through the Warriors dynasty. Coming to the point of him potentially signing the Lakers, the 69-year-old already has experience coaching 5x All-NBA player, including Anthony Davis, at the New Orleans Pelicans.

Notably, Davis experienced great growth under the stint of Gentry at Pelicans. He recorded a career-high 28.1 points during the 2017-18 season and 2.6 blocks, which was the best in the league. Considering the effect of Gentry calling out the plays on the current Lakers player proves his mettle while fulfilling coaching duties. That’s why JJ Redick is pursuing such a veteran coaching staff for his team.

However, it’s worth noticing that it has been more than two months since Rob Pelinka fired the whole coaching department. Yet he did not appoint anyone until he finalized Redick as the head coach, and the latter took charge of his duties.

As mentioned above, after going through Alvin Gentry’s name for a potential associate coach head coach role at the Lakers, the NBA community is irked at Rob Pelinka. Even the Lakers insider, Anthony F. Irwin, opinionated that it was “insane” how the front office has not hired the assistant coach yet. Well, it is not the first mistake that NBA experts are calling out. Pelinka’s inability to land Klay Thompson on the roster during the latter’s free-agency period is also in the line of question.

Notably, Klay Thompson joined the Dallas Mavericks two days ago. Interestingly, Thompson has always been a Lakers fan as he used to roam around the Staples in high school as per The Times. Moreover, he grew up being a great fan of Kobe Bryant. Yet the Lakers could not go for a successful run for the shooting guard. That’s why Fox Sports ‘First Things First’ co-shot Nick Wright commented, “I am BAFFLED at the total inability of Rob Pelinka to get anything done, ever.” Considering Thompson was perfect to complement LeBron James on the court with his accurate shooting.

No doubt, Rob Pelinka has missed big time on getting Thompson for the team. They would have needed a sign-and-trade deal to land the Lakers, but unfortunately, the team did not have enough flexibility to go for such a move. On top of that, JJ Redick has got Dalton Knecht and Bronny James into the team, leaving only two spaces for more players.
