LeBron's no-trade clause: Smart move or just another power play by the King?

LeBron James will indeed remain a Laker, but contrary to the reports, there is no pay cut. As reported by Adrian Wojnarowski, the Akron Hammer has signed a two-year $104 million extension with the Purple and Gold. The deal is of shorter term than his eligible three-year $164 million extension. However, it ensures the two most vital priorities for himself and the Lakers. First, he gets to play with Bronny James, his elder son during his rookie season. Additionally, the Lakers secure his services for at least another season.

The two-year deal includes a no-trade clause as well as a player option for the final season. It’s the second time in his career that James has earned the no-trade clause for his four-year service with the Lakers other than the mandatory eight-year career required to avail such power.

It could very well mean that this is the last ride for LeBron James and he could retire following his son’s rookie year. If so, he would join an elusive list of greats who retired donning the Purple and Gold uniform. At the same time, he has the flexibility to join another team in case the King still craves the taste of another title.

The Laker Nation has all the reasons to celebrate his allegiance to the badge. But him not taking the reported pay cut means the Lakers will most likely have none of the high-profile free agents at an MLE. The responsibility now transfers to Rob Pelinka. So, it is critical that he delivers a well-rounded roster to James and Anthony Davis during their potential last season as a tandem.

What does this extension mean for the Lakers?

Pelinka and Jeanie Buss have ensured the franchise retains its stature as a contender simply by having LeBron James on their side for one more season. However, with him earning an average of $52 million, the front office will have to scratch their heads and look for a trade to strengthen the roster for next season.

The most mentioned name in trade talks has been D’Angelo Russell. After a career season with the Lakers, Russell opted into his $18.7 million player option for next season. That, along with other similar scale contracts, will most likely be utilized to formulate a further trade. It might mean LeBron James has to part ways with Rui Hachimura, whom he took under his wing last season.

“We’ve worked out together pretty much all summer … I see a lot in him. … I call him my Daniel-san and I’m Mr. Miyagi,” he told Dave McMenamin last season.
