Interestingly, Dan Hurley has emerged as the new superpower as a potential candidate for the Lakers head coach job. However, the factor to be considered is the NBA community seems fairly impressed with it. Recently, Magic Johnson, a basketball legend and ex-Laker, himself acknowledged Hurley. The speculations are gaining a strong foothold that the Lakers front office might offer a multi-million dollar deal to the UConn coach. There are speculations about how they would fare tactically and off-court should Hurley land a spot. However, ESPN analyst, Jorge Sedano seems quite horrified by the potential downfall of Rob Pelinka’s current approach.

On ESPN LA, he spoke about rumors stating Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss were aligned to offer Hurley an estimated $100 million deal. It did not seem fair to the analyst, as he said, “If this goes bad for some reason …Rob Pelinka has put a massive bull’s eye on his back.” He then pointed out the nuances of such a big deal. They come with huge responsibilities. Without a doubt, Hurley has coached well at college. However, apart from the skills, personality traits also matter among NBA teams.

Sedano also mentioned it was “not a commitment they [Lakers] normally make. So, it’s high-risk high reward. If it works Rob is a made-man dude he’s the next Jerry West. But if it doesn’t, oh boy.” Therefore, Rob Pelinka might be jeopardizing his position with such a bold move, after asking Darvin Ham to step out. The next person to be held responsible, should this go south would be Pelinka.

Will pulling Dan Hurley off as a pro coach prove Rob Pelinka’s mettle?

Rob Pelinka is trying to save his skin this time as the Lakers GM desperately needs a team rebuilder. Though Hurly doesn’t have any NBA credentials, he is unbeatable in the college basketball space. The move seems similar to the Celtics hiring Brad Stevens in 2013. Brad was also a newcomer to pro basketball. He had great experience as the coach of the Butler Bulldogs. Eventually, he gave results, and the Lakers seem to be trying the same.

The most common rumor for the Hurley deal is an 8-year contract. Such a long-term deal proves Rob Pelinka is not looking at short-term goals. The Lakers GM wants the Purple and Gold to restore its legacy once again by winning the Championship, most likely within the final years of LeBron James at the franchise. So, as Sedano mentioned earlier, this deal will put a lot at stake for many parties on the LA side and if Pelinka’s all-out strategy goes well, he might emerge as the next Jerry West for the Lakers!

But if things go south, it will be Rob Pelinka who’ll be packing his bags first, from the looks of it. Since UConn has accumulated so many headlines, there will be some traction and appreciation around his recruitment amidst the question marks. However, for now, the deals are just happening out of thin air, and nothing is official. Let’s wait and see what vision Pelinka has got for his team ahead.
