Since his polarizing hire, fans believe JJ Redick has been brought in to bolster the Lakers’ main aim to maximize their LeBron James window. As a rookie coach, his expertise and analytical brilliance immediately stand out. However, the short-term window was far from the focus in Rob Pelinka’s mind. On media day, he spoke positively about Redick’s true reasons for taking the helm, and it hugely benefits Bronny James.
Since taking over the Lakers’ responsibility, one word has resonated with Redick. He has stressed upon development. The objective is to nit together a roster that can propel the club post-LeBron James. That naturally includes molding his eldest into a valuable component of the franchise. “I would assume LeBron would be very proud that someone like that is also helping his son learn the game. Someone that cerebral and that competitive and that motivated” Pelinka said of Redick.
It was for exactly those reasons that LeBron James sidelined himself during the coaching hire process. The Akron Hammer let the Lakers find a suitable candidate who can carry on the Purple and Gold badge after his career ends. Anthony Davis’ preferences were influential in that regard.

“I wanted the Lakers, as a player and as a fan of the franchise, to be able to hire the coach that should be there… And to be able to find someone that could be stable in that position is very key for any franchise,” LeBron James said of Redick’s hire to ESPN.
Pelinka too had a thriving future for the franchise in mind to not experience “the cliff that maybe some other franchises have experienced” after James’ eventual departure. Notably, the Cavaliers swam into the bottom and so did the Heat once the decisive presence of LeBron James was withdrawn from their ranks.
But how does Redick help the Lakers stay competitive in the future? He has already implemented several tactics to ensure the picture stays bright.
JJ Redick could unlock the potential of Bronny James and other Lakers youngsters
Typically, the prospect of coaching LeBron James is a bragging honor for several coaches. Redick though has barely mentioned it when he speaks about the Lakers. Instead, he has spoken highly about the youth the Lakers boast. In particular, Austin Reaves has been among his favorites. He sees similarities between himself and Reaves in their relentless competitive pursuit.

He has also done the same for Max Christie and professed to make him a “guy in his career who has a high level of impact winning for a lot of the reasons”. But he could have a particularly profound effect on Bronny James due to their common playstyle. As an NBA player, Redick was regarded most for his impeccable shooting mechanics.
The 19-year-old struggled to fire his most daunting weapon during the Summer League. It’s not that Bronny James can’t translate his shot into the NBA. During the draft combine, the USC product stood out as one of the most efficient from range. With Redick’s supervision, Bronny can learn to master the various fundamentals to become consistent in that regard and also develop at a rapid pace.
Solely as a prospect, JJ Redick loves the teenager. He feels he is extremely ‘coachable’, a trait that can allow him to fully dial into developing a crop of young Laker stars that can help the franchise in the future. Then there is the case of Anthony Davis, who the rookie coach wishes to transform and make the mainstay of his system.

Such a change hadn’t been brought in by any prior Laker coach in the presence of LeBron James still running rambunctiously. JJ Redick is hoping to be the answer for the future. He isn’t relying on a one-two-man punch to solve problems. Rather his philosophies need multiple influences within the roster. The revolutionized concept is what convinced the Lakers to trust in him.
Practical testing is yet to be done, but through his ideologies alone, JJ Redick’s hire looks to be a move in the positive direction.
