From a rookie in 2015 to an NBA superstar, life has come full circle for Devin Booker. He joined the league when he was 18, and since then has sensationalized the game with the Phoenix Suns. But that’s not the only thing he touched with a Midas hand. He went a step ahead and made people fall in love with his shoes. Whenever he played, people would bet and gloriously argue which Nike-Kobe shoe he would wear for the night.

His sneaker choices have always been envious. And for someone so passionate about footwear, having his sneaker line with Nike does make a lot of sense. His hard work, diligence, and patience fully paid off when Nike signed a six-year contract extension with him. And voila! This spring, in February, we saw his long overdue signature Nike shoe line – The Book 1.

Hardcore Devin Booker fans know about his love for sneakers and how he has been a lifelong collector. In a 2019 interview, he shed light on his lifelong dream that was fulfilled this year. “That’s the dream: to have a signature shoe. I think having a player exclusive is right up there with it. A signature shoe comes with winning. I think my time will come. I’ve put in the work. Once those wins start showing up, I think it’ll be ready to go.”

He did put in his hard work and he did put in his passion. Interestingly, his passion for becoming a tastemaker from just an avid sneaker collector predates his NBA debut. He spoke about this intimate detail to JJ Redick, on the podcast show, The Old Man and the Three.

Devin Booker revealed that as a kid, he used to make sketches of what his future signature shoe line would look like. He used to put his signature across the sketches in school. His passion manifested into reality when he was doing it today with one of the best shoemakers in the world. Needless to say, Devin Booker is on cloud nine right now. JJ Reddick led the conversation further, elaborating on how he feels grateful to be able to afford Nike sneakers for his children, considering how expensive it is for a larger section of society.

With sneakers like these comes a sense of privilege, a sense of fandom that only a few people share. Booker related to and completely agreed with what Reddick said. He couldn’t wait to add in his experience with how he used to buy his sneakers – by waiting in lines! He said, “... or wait in lines… I’ve done that a couple of times, camped out for some Jordans”. Indeed, from waiting in line to getting his signature shoe line with Nike, his life has come full circle.

Devin Booker’s journey to Nike Book 1

Devin Booker wasn’t just an average kid who dreamt about becoming a professional NBA player. He was determined and able to put in the hard work to make it all happen. He gave his all to become who he is today – long hours of work and dedication to become someone worthy of all the fame, money, and popularity. The shoe deal is just a reflection of how he never just gave his bare minimum.

When he entered the league as a rookie, he initially signed a deal with Nike, which got an extension in 2018. And then when that deal was also about to come to an end, they signed yet another extension in 2022. The meeting to extend his contract was just supposed to be a normal, typical meeting where they would sign a contract and go back to business. However, Nike designers and executives traveled to Phoenix to meet the NBA star and his agent, his father, and his brother.

Suddenly, the conversation drifted to the history of the Nike “swoosh” sign, starting with discussing Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and so forth. The meeting saw the discussion of each of the 23 NBA athletes and 7 WNBA athletes – all Nike icons. Finally, the needle of the conversation swung onto their 24th NBA star, Devin Booker, whom Bike wanted as a future face of the brand. The meeting room went quiet. Everyone knew what was going to happen; his signature line was on its way. It most definitely was a surprise for Booker. “It was a really special moment,” Booker mentioned while recalling the long-awaited moment.

Booker sported his new signature collection in a matchup against the Houston Rockets on February 23, 2024. He donned the Nike Book 1 All-Star PE, inspired by the 1996 NBA All-Star games in Phoenix. The shoes featured a black patent leather “swoosh” sign over purple suede, along with turquoise laces for an elegant finish. A simple silhouette, designed to capture a strong reaction from the fans.

Before the All-Star weekend, Devin Booker was all over Indianapolis. The larger-than-life marketing campaign by Nike decorated the weekend. Of course, Booker was “too excited about it”. After all, upon launch, his shoe line was sold out in just a matter of 2-3 minutes. It was truly surreal for Booker. And the release of the Book 1 shoe couldn’t come at a better time. It was the time when he received his 4th All-Star selection.

It’s kind of surreal to see the billboards, especially the one that’s on the Hyatt Place,” Booker said. “It’s a full thing. It’s a special time for me and my family and just being part of the brand, being part of Nike.” What started as a childhood hobby of sketching has now turned into reality for him. Given the rarity of the achievement and how long he pursued it, this was indeed a winning moment for Devin Booker.
