The Golden State Warriors waived veteran point guard, Chris Paul, after failing to reach an agreement on his $30 million guaranteed salary. In fact, CP3 had even agreed to push back the date in hopes of finding a middle ground. However, no such thing happened and Paul turned into a free agent. And it comes at the perfect time, given that one of the hottest free agency destinations has had its eyes on the “Point God”.

The San Antonio Spurs were rumored to be quite interested in bringing Chris Paul to join hands with their ace, Victor Wembanyama. As luck would have it, it seems like the 12x All-Star deemed it fit to offer his services to Pop and Co. The latest update from ESPN veteran Adrian Wojnarowski has fans overjoyed and on cloud nine for San Antonio! “Free agent guard Chris Paul has agreed on a one-year, $11 million-plus deal with the San Antonio Spurs, sources tell ESPN.”

We don’t have to tell you that this news comes in the wake of a much anticipated Clippers re-union with their all-time assists leader, as Russell Westbrook’s future seems uncertain. However, putting aside the nostalgia, San Antonio seems like the first movers here.

Chris Paul joins a desperate Victor Wembanyama looking for a point guard to run the offense. The Spurs struggled with their guard depth all season, often having to run their offense through forward Jeremy Sochan and Wemby himself. However, Paul can now erase that deficit in the Spurs roster and help the young Frenchman reach his full potential. Interestingly, before the fan’s excitement, CP3’s comment from March 2024 after facing the SA side is now redoing the rounds on the internet.

“He’s such a smart player and a good defender that he changed a couple of my middies tonight,” Chris Paul had admitted. “He does a lot of things that don’t show up on the stat sheet.” Visibly, it already seems that the veteran has great admiration for the future headliner. And he isn’t alone, as the fans were quick to celebrate this union and took to X to share their excitement.

Spurs faithful wholeheartedly celebrate Chris Paul’s Spurs arrival envisioning Victor Wembanyama’s growth

The NBA World couldn’t contain its excitement with CP3’s team-up with Wembanyama. With the 7’5 frame of Wemby, Paul can certainly roll back the ‘Lob City’ days. This excited several fans who shared their opinion through X.

“Lob City 2.0” proclaimed one fan who rejoiced at the pairing of Paul & Wembanyama. Remove the ‘2.0’ and it was every headline for when Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and Deandre Jordan possessed their version of Showtime, qualifying for 6 back-to-back playoffs from 2012-17 and two division titles. And the Spurs who haven’t won a Championship in a decade could eclipse greatness in the next 3-5 years if all goes to plan, couldn’t they?

Meanwhile, some paid more attention to the pick-and-roll plays that CP3 could run alongside Wemby and help him hone his game. “PNR offense with Wemby going to be cold fr,” said one fan. “Wemby finally got someone who’s gonna throw him some decent lobs,” said another, further emphasizing the Lob City claims, which are likely to come true because the young Frenchman has already averaged a staggering 21.4 points and 10.6 blocks in a game along with 3.6 blocks in an under-par Spurs season with minimal support.

Some pointed out that the 39-year-old can also elevate the Spurs’ rookie Stephon Castle. CP’s OKC days served as a reminder of how he elevated, not just a team but even a youngster of Shai Gilgious-Alexander’s caliber in the 2019-20 season, powering them to the 5th seed.

Paul may not have a shot at winning his 1st ring on the Spurs, who are in their rebuilding phase. However, the 39-year-old will certainly get a better opportunity to showcase his experience and versatility, even at this age, with him being part of the team’s core.

A fan also pointed this out, saying “Oh sure absolutely It’s a great culture. No chance of winning anything. They will pay him more than anyone else that’s why he is going there.”

However, in reality, Chris Paul has taken a massive pay cut to join the Spurs. ESPN reports his agreed-upon deal is worth about $11 million. However, the 12x All-Star’s decision comes much in Wembanyama and coach Popovich’s favor.
