Can LeBron's mentorship turn Bronny into a future NBA star, or is the pressure too much?

“As he continues to grow as a young man, he has so much room for improvement. I’m looking forward to helping him improve. I know the coaching staff is helping him improve and everybody on the team.” Having realized the dream of playing alongside his eldest son in the NBA before he retires, LeBron James revealed in July how he wants to see Bronny progress fairly.

The 20-year-old certainly has had trouble leaving a mark since his college tenure, having averaged only 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists at USC. While new head coach JJ Redick is making attempts to help the young star through his ‘player development’ program, Papa James is also making use of his two decades’ worth of experience to help his son however he can.

The official YouTube account of the NBA was recently able to capture a moment of the father-son on the sidelines. While LeBron James did not play the ongoing matchup between the Lakers and Suns, Bronny was added to the 5-man lineup during the latter part of the game. While the conversation between the duo was inaudible, it was quite apparent that LeBron was giving Bronny advice on how he can make the best use of his point guard/shooting guard position efficiently when going up against KD and Co.

Possessing a 4-2 record against the Suns during the regular season, LeBron James would certainly know where the rival franchise’s weak points lie. Having done several impressive things throughout his 22-year-long NBA career, creating his own teammate ‘from scratch’ is the most recent feat that NBA enthusiasts can now applaud the hoops veteran for.

From a throwback clip featuring the then-young NBA player hooping alongside a 5-year-old Bronny and an even younger Bryce to the duo finally teaming up in the Lakers’ second 2024 preseason game against the Suns, the USC product certainly has come a long way in learning both directly and indirectly from the man who stands amongst the greatest basketball players of the modern generation.

LeBron James’ early attention towards his son, both as a father and as a coach, is what may have allowed Bronny’s early career to generate plenty of hype. An earlier composite ranking by 247Sports had listed the then-high school player as a 4-star prospect, along with ranking 45 overall in the 2023 class.

Bronny’s cardiac arrest back in July 2023 delayed his start at USC and even limited his on-court minutes. While things had improved slightly for him during the Summer League, they are now at an all-time low as the 20-year-old goes up against the best that the world of basketball has to offer. He has only averaged 1 point, 1 rebound, and 0.3 assists over the last 4 games.

Therefore, if there is anyone who can use a guiding hand just a few days until the regular season starts, it is Bronny. By not including him during the Lakers preseason debut game and the recent Suns matchup, JJ Redick made it clear that he wanted LeBron James to rest before things started heating up in the regular season.

After all, along with being the oldest current NBA player at 39 years, the All-Time Scorer is also coming off a Gold Medal run at the Olympics. However, instead of resting, LeBron James took a keen interest in partly interrupting but helping Redick with his job by handing out tips to Bronny. Even when not in the middle of the action, King James chooses to make himself useful somewhere.

By hooping together, LeBron and his son are setting a major precedent in the NBA world. As it turns out, however, their dynamic is inspiring people beyond the world of basketball too, with an NFL legend especially giving the NBA duo a shoutout.

Deion Sanders highlights wish to play alongside sons after being inspired by LeBron James and Bronny: “This speaks to Fatherhood”

While many critics took a shot at Bronny on being drafted with a low college stat line, NFL legend Deion Sanders was not amongst them. A simple “this ain’t right” message to the haters was not the first time that the 2x Super Bowl champion came to LeBron James’ son’s aid, earlier using his podcast platform, assuring him not to take too much pressure. Now, having seen both father and son donning the same jersey on the same NBA court, the Colorado boss envisions a situation like that for himself too.

Almost two weeks ago, Coach Prime highlighted a pic of the NBA’s maiden father-son duo on his official X feed. He added a caption alongside it too, that read, “I’m COMING Back to play with my sons to! This is HISTORICAL! Give this man his FLOWERS NOW! This speaks to Fatherhood, Excellence & Longevity. @KingJames @BronnyJamesJr.”

LeBron James responded in kind to the compliment, stating, “Let’s go Prime!!!!”, and a couple of laughing emojis after Sanders put a photoshopped picture of himself in the same jerseys as his sons.

Ever since retiring from the NFL as a player back in 2005, Deion Sanders had been alternating as a coach with different college teams. Currently being the HC for Colorado State, the 57-year-old gets to coach two of his sons, Shedeur and Shilo Sanders, as they are currently making their mark in the world of football too. However, Deion instead wants to work with his sons as a player, not a coach!

While coming back to the hoop, being with the Lakers as well as having his father alongside him, Bronny James has gotten the perfect platform to hone his raw skills. Whether the same will see his performance improve over the years remains to be seen.
