LeBron James teaming up with Amazon—Is this the future of NBA broadcasting we’ve been waiting for?

LeBron James seems to be aging like fine wine and we, the sommeliers, are relishing it to the fullest. At least that’s what one can say after his stunning performance on the Paris Olympic stage. But let’s face it, the 39-year-old has a few years left on the hardwood. If you are a LeBron fan wondering how you would catch a glimpse of the legend following his retirement, there’s no need to worry. The man himself dropped a clue regarding his future intentions.

LeBron was recently invited to the GoJo and Golic podcast where he spoke about his Olympic journey and the upcoming historic NBA season with his elder son. He hinted at his potential career choice once his hoop days are over. When the hosts inquired if the 4-time champion sees himself on the broadcasting field, LeBron replied, “You know, I don’t know. I definitely love the sport. It would be great.” Citing the example of the arguable NFL GOAT, who took the broadcasting seat after 20 seasons of brilliance on the field, LeBron added, “I see Tom Brady doing it, and he’s been great so far. And, you know, we will see, even if it’s just a guest appearance, you know, one game or two when I’m done playing.”

Highlighting the importance of sports in the James household, LeBron continued, “But it’s always fun to give back to the game because the game has given me so much. So, if it’s basketball, if it’s football, if it’s whatever, I love the word ‘sport,’ because it’s given so much to me and my family. And it’s only right that I give back to it.”

If LeBron is seriously considering a career in this field, then the NBA’s new broadcasting partner, Amazon, will happily welcome him as they’ve allegedly been interested in the 20-time All-Star. However, his employment could be a threat to the former league stars, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O’Neal, who have been in the role with TNT for years. With Amazon intruding on the market, TNT’s media rights will expire following the 2024-25 season. So, the analysts, anyway, would compete for the same role, especially now that LeBron is keen on entering the picture. However, there’s a potential condition that could end his basketball career.

The NBA’s future is in the safe hands of Amazon. To bring the same experience as TNT brought to the NBA community for decades, Amazon plans on adding fresh faces to their panel to discuss the aspects of the game. Among their alleged choices are LeBron James, JJ Redick, and Duke alum, as per Andrew Marchand of The Athletic. Now that Redick has a stable future with the Lakers, they’ll be left with the other two choices. But accepting the offer could mean that LeBron would have to retire early.

The Insider further stated, “As far as analysts go, One name, if you want to think really big — and aggregators, hold your rewrites for now — is LeBron James, if he were to retire by 2025-26.” Will this mean fans have to bid an early goodbye to “the chosen one”?
