When Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson came together for the Dream Team, the opinion was flat out in the same line. There was not a shred of doubt about the calibre of the team and the hope they’ll deliver. But when it comes to Team USA in 2024, the Avengers Team, the Dream Team 2.0 or whatever you want to call them, there’s always a divide in opinions. On paper, this team filled with LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry and more is 7-0 since assembling and has already qualified for the next round. But they still didn’t match the expectations in the eye test.
This was the big talking point on the latest episode of NBA Today on ESPN when Brian Windhorst raised a concerning aspect of Team USA’s play so far. And just like mentioned previously, Team USA again created a polarizing effect.
According to the ground zero reporter, “They don’t have great chemistry yet. They kind of just run random offense at times, which they’re just sort of going on principles and just trying to make plays off each other, and that’s just the nature of not having time together. So that is one thing that US wants to stay out of. They wanna have a high-tempo game.” To which Kendrick Perkins opposed. The former NBA star said, “This Olympic team, they’re flawless. They’re Beyonce. Okay? They’re flawless when it comes down to the Achilles heel. Now they don’t have none of that. You got that in Kevin Durant and LeBron James as well. Then you have a spark plug in Anthony Edwards.”

Team USA so far has a flawless record with wins by 26 and 17 points respectively in the two games. They’ll play against Puerto Rico on Aug 3 and the only expected result is a win. So for the future, Perks had some words of caution for Team USA as they strive to be more like Beyonce.
Perkins highlights one team LeBron James and Co. should be wary of
During the same show, LeBron’s former teammate cautioned Steve Kerr‘s men. So far no other has found the answer to the USA onslaught and that is the minimum expectation of them. According to Perkins, “The only thing that’s gonna beat Team USA is Team USA, and that’s them not having the right mindset. I don’t see that happening with Steve Kerr, Erik Spoelstra, and Ty Lou leading the way.”

The same apprehensive approach was also seen in Team USA HC’s comments earlier today. “We talked to them about it this morning. We showed the standings, we showed the point differential. We want the one seed. So it gives you the best match-up in the quarterfinals. If we drop down to 2 or 3, which, I think is unlikely, we’ve gotta take care of our business,” Kerr said. So expect zero slacking from LeBron James and his teammates in their final Group C game. After all, they’re here to run the world!
