The Lakers have had a wild season so far. From being heavily criticized for their summer acquisitions to being written off as non-contenders for the championship, to now standing strong on the fifth spot in the West, the Purple and Gold have been through it all. But the tough part about being the Lakers is the criticism is louder than the praise when warranted. To avert the constant scrutiny the team needed some much-deserved time to unwind. Remedy? Naming your favorite sports movie. LeBron James kept up his habit of standing out here too as his answer could surely turn some heads.

When LeBron was handed the microphone to share his choice with the world, the 40-year-old took a moment to think before saying, “Shooting Stars.” Some of you might have immediately gone through the last line again to make sure your eyes didn’t deceive you. After all, weren’t we all expecting him to pick his own film, Space Jam: A New Legacy?

LeBron worked on the sequel of the Looney Tunes series, which was released in 2021. The story centered around the Lakers superstar, whose son was kidnapped by the villain, Al-G Rhythm. To rescue the little boy, LeBron was made to pair up with the Looney Tunes and face off against a digitized basketball team in a virtual world. While the movie was visually dynamic, it didn’t perform well at the box office, earning around $163 million worldwide.

One of the reasons for its underperformance was its supposedly weak narrative, with much of the focus placed on Warner Bros. branding rather than LeBron’s character. Although that has never been publicly claimed, some believe that left the big man feeling a bit dissatisfied. And maybe, just maybe, he’s still a little bitter about that experience that’s why he didn’t choose the movie. However, there was someone in the Lakers squad who seemed to be a fan of it.

Apart from LeBron James, several other players from the Purple & Gold shared their picks. Some chose classics like Remember the Titans and He Got Game, while it was the rookie, Dalton Knecht, who picked Space Jam. However, he didn’t specify whether he was referring to LeBron’s version or the one starring Michael Jordan.

Even though LeBron didn’t pick his own movie, he chose the movie that was about his own journey. Many of you must already know that Shooting Stars tells the story of LeBron and his high school sports career. The movie came out two years ago and received positive reviews. While LeBron didn’t play the lead role, it was Mookie Cook who portrayed him.
