With Steve Kerr unlikely to return, the idea of James and Curry coaching together in 2028 is gaining traction. Legends coaching legends? The thought alone is enough to excite basketball fans worldwide. But with that thought comes that dreadfulness of their retirement. Even if they are throwing away plans of their retirement now and then, fans have not come to terms that their favorite stars will stop playing one day.
Retirement Speculation Looms Over All-Star Weekend
While LeBron skipped his first All-Star Game in 20 years, Curry stole the spotlight, winning his second All-Star MVP, the only Warriors player to leave with hardware. Yet, his comments during All-Star Weekend fueled speculation about his playing future.
Soon to be turning 37, Curry remains one of the NBA’s best. He is signed through 2026-27, the same year Jimmy Butler’s contract ends. Retirement might be creeping into his thoughts. Speaking with Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard, Curry admitted, “You think about that more and more. I’m not at the farewell yet… but that’s just part of time.”
“You need a little bit of fear of what’s coming, what an end might look like, to inform decisions that you’re making now and appreciate what’s going on right now,” Curry added.
Meanwhile, LeBron’s career longevity remains a marvel, but at 40, speculation about his eventual exit is inevitable. Could coaching Team USA be his next challenge?

If James and Curry take over Team USA in 2028, it would be an unprecedented transition of leadership. The duo, two of the greatest players of all time, could reshape USA Basketball the way they did the NBA.

Their presence as coaches would also set the tone for the next generation of superstars. Young talents like Anthony Edwards, Jayson Tatum, and Paolo Banchero could benefit from their leadership, ensuring Team USA’s dominance continues.
Meanwhile, their retirement discussions highlight the changing landscape of the NBA. As Curry and LeBron near the end of their playing days, a new era of basketball is set to emerge, led by rising stars like Victor Wembanyama, Luka Dončić, and Chet Holmgren.
While LeBron and Curry continue to defy age, their recent remarks suggest they’re preparing for life after basketball. Whether it’s coaching Team USA in 2028 or transitioning into other leadership roles, their impact on the game will continue far beyond their playing careers.
