Amid all the excitement and thrill of what is surely going to be a blockbuster NBA Finals series, it seems like we have more to be proud of. Doris Burke makes history. Yes, the 59-year-old reporter becomes the first woman to serve as a game analyst for any major men’s professional event. Well, turns out it is one of the major sports in the USA in its Championship finals!

With ABC/ESPN heading the broadcasting, they saw Burke as a natural option to join the panel of Mike Breen and JJ Redick. Joining ESPN in 1990, Burke has been covering the finals since 2009. With 14 years of Finals experience under her belt, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say that she is the perfect candidate. Always in awe of exceptional individuals and mindful of their achievements, LeBron James didn’t wait long to give the ESPN analyst her due flowers.

Taking to X, he celebrated the milestone with a message of his own. “Important moment for our sport tonight. Love and respect to DB and everything she does to elevate all of us! You’re a [GOAT],” followed by emojis that showcased his respect and love.

A GOAT she is indeed, and in many ways than one. Burke’s love for basketball began in an interesting encounter when she was 7.

When her family moved from NY to New Jersey, their new home had a basketball left by the previous owners. The youngest of eight kids, it’s not hard to imagine how a 7-year-old would be in the way of unpacking and assembling chaos. That’s when her mother, to her relief, saw the basketball.

Placing the ball in the hands of little Doris, her mother brought her attention to a park next door and suggested she go and play. The best words to hear from a parent for a young child! However, it was a butterfly effect. “It feels like I picked up the ball at seven years of age, and I haven’t put it down since to be perfectly honest with you,” Burke had said once.

From playing, coaching, and now covering her beloved sport, Doris Burke has worked hard to get where she is.

Doris Burke had given props to LeBron James, amongst others, for “private words of support”

It would seem like the NBA on ABC analyst is indeed beloved by everyone involved with basketball. When she was awarded the Curt Gowdy Media Award in 2018 by The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Burke did not forget to mention everyone who helped her get to that point in her life. And that included none other than King James.

“To the players and coaches of the NBA – Rick Carlisle, LeBron James, Steve Kerr, Chris Paul, and many many others. Your private words of support to me and your public statements of support of my work went far beyond what you could imagine in the confidence I had to do the job that ESPN had given me,” she said in her acceptance speech.
