Guess where ‘The Kid from Akron’ was spotted today? LeBron James attended Monday night’s CFP National Championship game between Ohio State and Notre Dame. Despite not attending a college in pursuit of his NBA career, the Laker was there to cheer on his hometown team, the Buckeyes! However, the hoops legend wasn’t alone. James was joined by his friend, Maverick Carter, though, who’s recently also been in the news for brainstorming a spicy NBA rival league.

Philadelphia Phillies slugger and 2x MVP Bryce Harper was also spotted alongside the Lakers star at the game. Both were donning Ohio State gear, clearly repping OSU! Harper, like LeBron, did not attend OSU, but that doesn’t mean either of them has no personal connection to the university.

LeBron grew up in Akron, Ohio, and who can forget his initial run with the Cavaliers that put him on the map? And local fans certainly won’t forget the betrayal they felt when he joined the Miami Heat. Harper’s ties run deep as well, with his wife Kayla Varner playing soccer at Ohio State. Kayla played for the Buckeyes from 2013 to 2014 and Bryce has been a proud fan since marrying Kayla in 2018!

Although it’s not like Notre Dame didn’t attract its own celebrity audience. Rapper and producer, Travis Scott, was in the building for the game as well, to witness some playoff action. And with no surprise, Scott was rallying behind the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. “Let’s f**k**g go,” he yelled before the game. The artist was also there to perform his new track 4×4 at the halftime show.

If you thought this was King James’ only distant tie with the Ohio State, then you’re in for a shock! That’s because there was a time when he wanted to conquer two worlds. So let’s see what he had to say about this ‘crossroad’ in his life.

Coming out of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, LeBron played basketball and football, being a multi-sport athlete. With the athleticism and sheer physicality of the King, it was inevitable that colleges would be interested in recruiting him. However, if he’d listened to one particular offer, then we may have been arguing about, “Is LeBron James the greatest NFL player of all time?”

In an interview with the Kelce brothers, LeBron admitted to OSU President, Jim Tressel, attempting to persuade him to give football a shot at OSU. LeBron said about Jim Tressel’s offer, “They knocked on the door. And it was like ‘If you come down to Ohio State, we want you to play both sides.’ And I would’ve definitely thought about that.”

LeBron then began getting wistful, as he admitted one of the major reasons he wanted to play was to share the stage with his best friend at the time, Sian Cotton. “That would’ve been super dope. I could’ve roomed with him. Played football during the fall, basketball during the spring,” exclaimed LeBron. “So that would’ve been dope,” he repeated, again.

With all the accolades and accomplishments in his career, we obviously now think LeBron made the right call by picking basketball. However, his truest fans will understand why he is still a little hung up on not getting to play with Cotton at OSU.
