Whether the GOAT or not, it is impossible to deny the sheer greatness of one LeBron James. Between his 4 NBA MVPs, Championships, and unmatched longevity, he has blazed a path unlike any other. However, one of the premier feathers in his cap came in last season. While the regular accomplishments are well and good, the title for most points all-time is one that stood the test of time. However, as we all know, that is a milestone, the kid from Akron?was able to achieve. But, curiously enough, it is not the most points any human has scored in basketball.
For that record, there is still a little ways to go for the?King.?

Not many basketball fans can forget the moment that James took the number 1 regular season scoring spot from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Sizing up at the key, with an Oklahoma City Thunder team that he won his first championship against, the Los Angeles Lakers #6 took a step to his left, pulled up, and cashed in. A 40-year record was no more.
But it wasn’t just one bucket that made it possible. Instead, it was countless hours, more than 54,000 minutes of greatness, that led to the incredible moment. Almost 40 years ago, The Captain?would overtake Wilt Chamberlain for the record. One, that would stand the test of time, until time itself met its match in LeBron.
However, the all-time regular season scoring record isn’t the most ridiculous number when it comes to basketball and scoring. That particular trophy goes to a Brazilian basketball legend who was a draft selection for the New Jersey Nets in the same year that Kareem first broke the record.
Coming in with the 131st overall pick, Schmidt chose to stay in Italy to continue his career, citing monetary differences. However, between Italy, Brazil, and Spain, Oscar carved a career unlike any other. A winner at every stop, he is a proud member of the Italian and the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. But, it’s one record in particular that stands out.
In his nearly 30-year career, Schmidt would compile a mind-numbing 49,737 points (including the points scored for his Brazilian National Team), more than 12,000 clear of Kareem’s historic record. But, looking at the totality of his career, James might not be far away from becoming the official “World Champion.”
LeBron James’ quest to the World Champion throne
While his plans to solidify the US as the World Champions seem to be underway, the King?could have another goal in sight. Even though the debate about what a basketball “World Champion” truly means continues to rage on, LBJ could single-handedly cease all debates.

Since his days as a rookie with the Cleveland Cavaliers, James has been on a quest. A quest chasing the ghost of Michael Jordan? Of course. But, at the same time, he has, whether intentionally or not, begun a chase for the all-time scoring record. Now, he stands just a shade over 2,000 points away from Oscar’s club career record of 42.044. Between LeBron’s playoff heroics and his knack for scoring at a high rate during the regular season, he seem well on his way to overtake that record.
At his last season’s scoring pace, it would take him 70 games to overcome the record. Between the NBA regular season, playoffs, and a possible Olympics appearance, that throne seems like one destined for?a King. A combination of the all-time scoring record and an Olympic gold medal could serve as a prelude to ending the World Champion debate.
