LeBron James’ Los Angeles Lakers era might soon be coming to an end. The 21-year veteran joined the Purple and Gold in 2018 in hopes of adding another title to his resume. LeBron accomplished that goal in 2020 during the Bubble season, winning his 4th career Championship. But the Lakers have not been able to lift the Larry O’Brien trophy since that season.

That has led to several rumors about King James leaving the Lakers after the end of this season. And the 4-time Champion is highly likely to join forces with Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama.

According to the latest trade rumors, the San Antonio Spurs are the favorites to acquire LeBron James if he decides to leave the Lakers following the end of this season. LeBron is in the first year of his 2-year $99 million contract, and he has a player option for next season. So, LeBron can put an end to his Lakers era next season if he chooses to. The move will see the 39-year-old teaming up with rookie Victor Wembanyama. That might form one of the most lethal duos in NBA history. With LeBron’s insane ability to make his teammates better and Wembanyama’s ability to score from anywhere on the court, the duo will be a nightmare for their opponents.

However, LeBron’s decision next season will depend on several aspects. LeBron’s son, Bronny James, will be eligible to declare for the NBA draft this year. If he chooses to make that move after his first season with the USC Trojans, it will hugely impact LeBron’s decision to choose his next destination. He might try to find a way to play alongside his son for the greatest moment of his career. LeBron’s decision might also depend on how far the Lakers go this season. If they win another Championship this season, LeBron might want to run it back another year.

LeBron’s history with the Spurs

Spurs’ interest in LeBron also comes as a shock because of the history between them. LeBron and the Spurs have been rivals for nearly two decades. It all began when The Akron Hammer faced the Spurs in the 2007 NBA Finals. Tim Duncan and Co. swept the young LeBron and handed him his first Finals defeat. The two butted heads again six years later after LeBron joined the Miami Heat. LeBron faced the Spurs in back-to-back Finals in 2013 and 2014.

With so many Finals matchups in the playoffs and the history between them, it will be strange to see LeBron in a Spurs uniform. However, that move might prove great for Wembanyama as he will get to learn from one of the Greatest players of all time.
