LeBron James hyped for this blockbuster—Is it the best Hollywood comeback we've seen in years?

Did anyone else ‘woke up this morning’ with the thought of reliving the nostalgic days of a Tony Soprano-run New Jersey? Well, ‘The Sopranos’ fans certainly did, as yesterday marked the trailer release of ‘Wise Guy’, a two-part documentary that covers the behind-the-scenes of the hit television show. Featuring life details of the creator David Chase himself, along with unseen footage and cast interviews, the upcoming series is a life come true for any die-hard fan of the notorious New Jersey Mafia.

The trailer in itself has piqued the interest of LeBron James, and he is not staying silent about his enthusiasm. Earlier today, the 39-year-old took to his official Instagram account to share the trailer on his story. If the same wasn’t enough to prove his liking of ‘The Sopranos’ to his 160 million followers, the NBA star also wrote a caption alongside that read “The GREATEST SHOW!! Can’t wait for this!”

Commemorating the 25 anniversary of ‘The Sopranos’, ‘Wise Guy’ is set to bring the elite cast back. From actors portraying members of Tony Soprano’s mob (Michael Imperioli) to the actresses who portrayed his wife and therapist (Edie Falco and Lorraine Bracco), it is a reunion to celebrate creator David Chase and the show that would set the foundation for other great shows to follow (Breaking Bad, Mad Men). Unfortunately, the actor who portrayed Tony Soprano himself, James Gandolfini, will not be present as he passed away, at the age of 51, back in 2013.

Have an interesting take?

This may be one of the first instances where LeBron James has shown his love for the HBO Drama. Given that it ran from 1999-2007, the peak years of ‘The Sopranos’ also coincided with the player’s rise himself.

Ironically, while LeBron had not shown any previous love to the show, two of its main cast members had shown the same to the NBA star. Back in April 2024, sportswriter Pablo S. Torre went viral for unearthing the footage, made by the New York Knicks, back in 2010. It was the same year when LeBron James had bid adieu to the Cleveland Cavaliers and was in free agency. The previously unseen video saw cast members James Gandolfini and Edie Falco reprising their roles of Tony and Carmela Soprano, three years after the much-discussed finale. Being in the ‘witness protection program’, the mob boss and his wife discussed looking for a new place for the NBA player, and deciding upon Madison Square Garden! Unfortunately, LeBron ended up preferring the shore to skyscrapers and took his talents to the Miami Heat.

LeBron James’s love for ‘The Sopranos’ seems to be justifiable. After all, the player has a close connection when it comes to HBO and some of its shows.

Has LeBron James ever worked with HBO?

Dominating on the basketball court isn’t the only thing that LeBron James has done in the last two decades. While most people only think of ‘Space Jam 2’ when looking into the player’s work in America, he has also worked alongside HBO on several projects.

For over 16 episodes, LeBron James served as the host of the HBO talk show ‘The Shop’. From Barack Obama to Sue Bird, conversations took place within different barber shops located around the country. Later, the decision was made to shift the show to YouTube.

Back in 2016, it was announced that the NBA star who served as an executive producer on HBO’s documentary about Muhammad Ali. Released three years later with the title ‘What’s My Name: Muhammad Ali’, it marked the first feature-length production for the television network from LeBron’s SpringHill Entertainment. The player would later return to HBO, in 2021, to serve as the executive producer on Season 3 of ‘Serial’, an investigative journalism podcast.

Other LeBron references have been made by HBO, and vice versa. In 2014, the crew over at ‘Mad Men’ created a special video, having lead character Don Draper pitching LeBron to return to Cleveland. ‘Space Jam 2’ carried several references to Game of Thrones, from a map of Westeros to a White Walker cheering on during a game.
