LeBron James' rare slip-up—Is A'ja Wilson the new MVP queen we should all be watching?

Another day and another history for A’ja Wilson. The Aces star kept her pace towards her 3rd WNBA championship by powering the Las Vegas side to a 97-79 victory over the Mercury. That called for celebration and LeBron James was all in for it. LeBron took to social media to share a video on his IG story posted by the WNBA showcasing A’ja’s performance, but there was a slight anomaly.

The odd thing about it was the timing, as the game was played on Saturday night. LeBron usually reacts just after the live game but missed this one because of his visit to Greece, to attend Giannis Antetokounmpo’s wedding. But that didn’t dampen his mood to give her “Sister” a deserved shout-out.

The Lakers ace wrote, “TOO DAMN GOOD!!!! My Sister better than yours!”, tagging A’ja Wilson. The two-time WNBA MVP recorded a 41-17-2 stat line against the Mercury to make herself a part of history. A’ja became the third player in WNBA history to record four 40-point games in her career, joining Breanna Stewart and 3-time champ Diana Taurasi.

Wilson wore Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority-inspired Nike LeBron 21 PE, making LeBron’s shout-out even more special. Her special performance even ended the MVP race for many fans as they hailed Wilson’s dominance.

Fans end MVP race after A’ja Wilson’s Mercury game

A fan wrote in the comments, “Unanimous MVP”, declaring A’ja the winner over fellow contenders, Napheesa Collier, Sabrina Ionescu, Caitlin Clark, and Breanna Stewart. Wilson is already a two-time WNBA MVP and if she keeps on dropping such performances, then there are not many who can stop her from claiming the 3rd.

Have an interesting take?

Another fan added, “And someone even had the courage to include some other players for the MVP award… For me this discussion has definitively ended today!!!” This was her 3rd 40+ point game this season, taking her PPG to 27.5 in 34.3 minutes played on average. Napheesa Collier is a close second, but can a 7.1 points per game difference be called close? Wilson even leads the league in blocks and is second in rebounds furthering her claim over the end-of-season award.

“Aja scared of losing MVP to Clark ..I never saw her so aggressive looking to score”, another observer remarked. Clark’s arrival to the league brought a massive number of eyeballs to the WNBA. The Fever rookie is already contending for the ROTY award but according to betting odds, she’s third behind Collier in the standings for the MVP. Clark’s Fever is currently 6th on the WNBA table with a 17-16 record, 2 seeds behind Wilson’s Ace. Has Clark’s inclusion really forced Wilson to up her game? That might be up for debate but there’s no denying how the latter is bossing the league.

There was a hint of humor in a fan’s comment, who wrote, “She doing 1v1s against bam.. you know it’s over”. That was a clear and obvious hint at A’ja’s rumored dating with Bam Adebayo. The Heat star has been seen going out with Wilson in Vegas during Team USA’s training camp before again being spotted with the WNBA star in Paris. While both instances can be pure coincidence, given their requirement for the national team, but paparazzi believe otherwise.

“Wow!!!! The real Face of th WNBA and th MVP!!!”, a comment read. A’ja Wilson has won the MVP award 2 times in the last 5 seasons and is tied with Brenna Stewart on the overall tally among active players. Only Lisa Leslie and Cheryl Swoopes have won it 3 times which A’ja can match this season. That’d surely make her the undisputed face of the league if she’s already not. The 28-year-old is at the peak of her career and can easily be seen as the best player of this generation with an accolades list so vast that it can be covered in a book.

There’s just under a month for the WNBA to roll to the playoffs and the ballots for the award will be drafted till the final day of the regular season. Till then the other contenders have a slim window to disrupt the race, but as things stand, the debate has already been put to bed.
