Can LeBron and Westbrook's reunion for charity heal the wounds of their past NBA missteps?

Is there still a beef between LeBron James and Russell Westbrook? The 4x NBA champion went on record to state, “I loved being teammates with Russ,” soon after the point guard’s 2-year tenure with the Lakers came to an end. However, Skip Bayless revealed that Beastbrook’s inability to fit in and score caused Bron’s potential annoyance, and directly caused the exit. ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk even claimed that the relationship between them was somewhat “frosty” in 2022. Despite what occurred, it’s safe to say that both the Chosen One and Westbrook don’t mind at least being in the same stadium and breathing the same air!

Earlier today, LeBron James took to his Instagram handle to share a story of him attending the Rams-49ers game. As the camera panned towards him on the jumbotron, he replied with his iconic ‘crown’ emote. The face-cam then immediately switched to Russell Westbrook, who was in attendance too, along with his twin daughters, Jordyn and Skye.

While showcasing the video, Bron attached a caption, writing, “Helluva game and great win guys!!” That would pretty much make it clear who he was supporting, as his loyalty to LA runs strong. However, the NBA legend also complimented his ex-teammate by writing, “S/O the Brodie!”

LeBron James and Russell Westbrook, reuniting to cheer for the LA side, comes months after Dave McMenamin reported about there being certain regrets over the two-year-old trade, highlighting “every member of the organization involved in the Russell Westbrook trade — including James – will admit they misjudged it, owning part of the blame.”

While the ‘every member’ part may highlight just how precarious the situation was, there is no denying that Bron played a bigger role in Westbrook’s trade than the other players. According to the Bleacher Report, Klutch Sports, wasn’t happy when Rob Pelinka “refused to trade Westbrook and a future first-round pick (likely 2027) for Houston Rockets guard and Klutch client John Wall.”

On top of that, LeBron James and Anthony Davis reportedly “encouraged the Lakers’ front office to go all-in for Westbrook” instead of completing the Buddy Hield trade. As the lead scorer “led the way on the recruiting front” through his “undeniable influence and direct style,” it was hard to rule out his influence.

At the same time, LeBron may have had his reasons for requesting a Westbrook trade. After acquiring the veteran, the Lakers hoped to get back into the groove. However, the 2021-22 season only saw the franchise securing a 33-49 record, which prevented them from even making it to the play-in series.

While the blame was not placed entirely on Russell Westbrook’s skills, it was believed that he couldn’t fit in or just wasn’t utilized expectedly. “I asked, is it a rift? And I was told that’s a little too harsh. But it definitely sounded like it’s frosty,” Ohm Youngmisuk then revealed. Two years after having gotten rid of him, the LA side still continues to struggle.

Even Beastbrook has emerged as a stiff competitor against them, a fact that LeBron James wasn’t too happy about at one point.

LeBron James was reportedly furious after his teammates couldn’t guard Russell Westbrook: “We’re better than that”

Back in November 2023, Russell Westbrook was thriving with the Clippers. The Bleacher Report claimed that the player “looked rejuvenated” with his new franchise. A good example of the same could be when he competed against his old squad, who were going through a losing streak. By putting up 24 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists, Beastbrook proved to be an efficient scorer, with his ability to steal the ball on 4 occasions and shooting 30% from beyond the arc only causing problems for the Lakers.

At one point, after Russell Westbrook made a 3-point play, LeBron James can be heard seemingly saying to his teammates, “No, we’re better than that. You just take the f— off, you’ve got to guard him.” When things got heated, the legend took the charge, reportedly saying “Give me that sh–” when he prevented Westbrook from scoring.

The dynamic between the two stars continues to be a question mark. While we now know that they can at least be in the same stadium, and that LeBron James gave him a shoutout on social media, it still does not guarantee whether bygones could be bygones.
