Are the Warriors risking too much for Markkanen, or is this the move they need for a title?

Lauri Markkanen is one of the most talked-about prospects this offseason. After players like Klay Thompson, Paul George, DeMar DeRozan, and others have already found their destinations. Lauri, on the other hand, has a lot of clubs interested in him, but the Jazz remain demanding. The Warriors have been the most active in trade talks surrounding Markkanen. They need a big man like him; however, their young stars stay attractive this offseason. Not only that, but Danny Ainge is on the lookout for younger assets from whoever is interested in Lauri.

As per recent reports, the Dubs have offered a pick-heavy package, along with Moses Moody, to the Jazz in exchange for Markkanen, which also includes pick swaps. However, the Jazz stay put. Utah is not willing to give away Lauri until Podziemski and Kuminga are on the existing offer. It is clear that the Warriors won’t be risking their young stars, namely Podz and Kuminga, considering their potential. At this point, it becomes quite complicated to deal with this trade.

It’s another thing that the Jazz want younger prospects, but then again, not many teams would be willing to come to a common point. A package full of picks would work too, if the Jazz want younger assets in the future. Moody is already a risk coming from the Warriors. The team has been dismantled following their previous title run. Poole was traded to Washington, Thompson is in Dallas, and DiVincenzo is a Knick. Left with Steph and Green, the Warriors only have their upcoming stars, Kuminga, Podz, and Moody, who can become the future core of the team.

If the Warriors would consider giving away such assets for Lauri Markkanen, it would not be a great decision from their end. Yes, Markkanen would be a great fit in Golden State, but definitely not worth giving away all their assets and picks. The competition in the West has moved levels in the past. Of course, teams will have standards while dealing with any trade. But is there a way the Warriors could come about trading for Markkanen?

Lauri Markkanen holds a lot of value this offseason

The Finnish won the Most Improved Player award last year and has maintained his game ever since. Averaging 23.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2 assists per game while shooting 48% from the field and 40% from deep, Markkaenen is definitely a valuable asset. The Warriors can consider giving away Melton along with the current offer. While this may not make any difference, this is the farthest they can go trying to bring in Markkanen.

Have an interesting take?

It’s pretty clear that the Dubs need their youngsters. And why not? The only notable addition to their roster this summer has been Buddy Hield. Other than that, the Warriors have tried their best to bring in better assets. Markkanen is a great option to look out for, but the Dubs will have to stay within limits. They already have a decent roster and they should not risk giving away such assets. It will be interesting to see how the Warriors go around this deal with the Jazz. What are your thoughts on Utah’s demands? Do you think the counter-deal is worth it? Let us know in the comments.
