The Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis trade has become the talk of the NBA. And rightfully so. But don’t forget that there are still a couple of days left before the mid-season deadline and teams are not done making moves. Well, the Hornets just pulled one off tonight, and it does not involve any star player. In fact, it does not involve a player at all!
As per the latest reports, the Charlotte franchise has acquired a 2029 second-round draft pick from the Thunder, that originally belonged to the Suns. In exchange, they have sent the Nuggets’ 2030 second-round pick to OKC. While the move didn’t make much sense, it might be part of a bigger plan. Maybe sending LaMelo Ball to the Warriors?
According to veteran insider Brett Siegel, the Hornets are not done yet. Of course, the future Suns draft picks have become more valuable recently because of their depleted draft capital to form the Big Three of Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal. The Hornets could use this acquired pick to facilitate a trade with the Warriors while Joe Lacob’s franchise looks for a star to pair alongside Stephen Curry.

In a desperate move, the Warriors have reportedly called about multiple All-Star players for a potential trade. As per Siegel, “Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, and LaMelo Ball are among the vast group of All-Star talents the Dubs have internally discussed before the trade deadline.”
Well, the Hornets’ latest move hints a Melo trade might be in motion. Obviously, the Bay Area franchise would have to give up a lot to acquire the All-Star guard.

Can the Warriors correct their mistake by finally acquiring LaMelo Ball?
Joe Lacob might never have been in this situation had he drafted LaMelo with his second overall pick in the 2020 draft. However, he chose James Wiseman instead. Sure, the move made sense at the time because they already had a superstar guard in Stephen Curry and needed a talented big man.
But five years later, it’s safe to say that not drafting Melo was a huge mistake because he has turned into a superstar, whereas Wiseman is not even on their roster anymore.

Well, Lacob could correct his mistake by acquiring Melo this time. Reports suggest he would have to give up Brandin Podziemski, Moses Moody, Andrew Wiggins, and maybe even Jonathan Kuminga to make the deal happen with the Hornets. Obviously, some draft capital will be involved as well. But it might be worth the risk because LaMelo could be the next superstar Lacob builds his franchise around after Curry hangs his boots.
Maybe, he has realized that, and the Hornets-Thunder trade is the first move to the potential blockbuster deal. The already historic deadline would become even more historic if Melo goes to the Warriors. What do you think the Hornets are planning with their latest move?
