Following the trade rumors about Spencer Dinwiddie moving to the Lakers or Mavericks, he linked up with Rob Pelinka. During the LA Lakers‘ match-up against the New Orleans Pelicans tonight, the star was spotted amidst the crowd, watching the game alongside the Lakers’ vice president of basketball operations.

Following this, fans engaged in pooling their opinions in the comments sections, on the possible outcome of the linkup. After Dinwiddie was traded to the Toronto Raptors, a report stated that the star expected to choose either the Lakers or Mavs after clearing the waivers, following his release from the Raptors.

On the other hand, the hoop nation raised questions on whether the Lakers would opt for the $1.6 million mid-level exception. This was enough for the fans to speculate about the trade.

Spencer Dinwiddie exited the Brooklyn Nets with reports stating that the star was not happy with his role in the side. Eventually, the team roped in Dennis Schroder in place of him, leaving him the option to pick his team.

While a lot was expected from the Lakers before the trade deadline, the LA side didn’t make a single trade. The team was planning to rope in Dejounte Murray from the Atlanta Hawks, but it didn’t take shape.

Right when the Lakers trade hype had died down, Spencer Dinwiddie’s recent link-up with Rob Pelinka opened the door for rumors right away. Will the Lakers take the leap and acquire the former Nets star? Only time will tell.

One may wonder how the Lakers can afford Dinwiddie without cap space. That is when mid-level exceptions come into the picture.

What is the mid-level exception? And how will it benefit the Lakers?

It is a hard and fast rule that the franchises should play around with the players’ salaries and trades with available cap space. But, in the NBA world, the teams are given an option to go beyond the cap space, but it comes with a price. The teams that go beyond their cap space are charged with luxury tax.

Similarly, the Lakers would take the highway if, at all, Spencer Dinwiddie comes into the side. Importantly, the 30-year-old didn’t just sit amidst the Lakers’ crowd. Last night, he was also spotted witnessing the Mavs game at Dallas. So the bottom line is Dinwiddie could end up in either of the teams.
