Well, it certainly looks like the Lakers’ chance to bag a big-name superstar before the start of next season is long gone. But that does not mean Rob Pelinka cannot pursue some solid young role players at a reasonable price to improve the roster. And the Jazz might have exactly the talent he is looking for. Set on their path to begin a rebuild, Utah could consider striking a deal to support Jeanie Buss’ faltering ambitions with the LA side, and part ways with two potential future stars, Walker Kessler and Collin Sexton.
Ever since free agency began, Kessler’s name has frequently popped up in the trade market as Utah reportedly does not see him as a part of their long-term plan. Moreover, there was even a stalled trade discussion between the Jazz and the Knicks involving the big man. And Pelinka could certainly capitalize on the opportunity and have his eyes set on the 23-year-old.
As of now, Walker Kessler has two years left on his current contract and is owed only $2.9 million in annual salary for next season. Sure enough, that is an absolute steal for a player like him who is getting better with each season and is a solid defensive presence.

Meanwhile, there have also been rumors of Utah possibly trading Collin Sexton if they are presented with the right offer. Yes, his asking price would be much more expensive than Walker Kessler’s, as he has shown superstar potential and is owed $18.3 million in salary for next season. However, that might not be a barrier for Pelinka. He wouldn’t mind making the trade considering the massive upside. Surely, the best-case scenario for the Lakers would be if they somehow poach both stars to fill two major voids.
How can Walker Kessler and Collin Sexton boost the Lakers’ title aspirations?
As far as Walker Kessler is concerned, his current contract might be the most attractive factor for Rob Pelinka. The Lakers will not get a better player at this price. With his seven-foot frame, Kessler could be a permanent rim protector, taking immense pressure off Anthony Davis. And they could rely on his shot-blocking ability, especially after witnessing his 2.4 blocks average this past season. Not only that, he can even put the ball in the basket whenever needed, which was evident with his 8.1 points average. Maybe, the only downside in his game is that he is not a great shooter from deep range. But that will get better with experience.
Meanwhile, with Collin Sexton, the Lakers will get an elite scorer who has proven his mettle ever since his rookie season. Be it his stint in Cleveland or now in Utah, he has shown that he can be effective on any team. This past season, he averaged a solid 18.7 points, which nearly equals D’Lo’s production in LA. Additionally, he is also a great playmaker who dished out just under 5 assists every night this year. Add that to his career, 38.3% shooting from deep range, and he could be the perfect fit for the Purple and Gold franchise.
