Is JJ Redick really ready to coach, or is he in over his head?

It’s never over until he proves himself. This is the only way out of the LA Lakers‘ new coach, JJ Redick. The former NBA star went through a rollercoaster before cementing his spot. But, the chatter hasn’t subsided yet. Can this inexperienced coach take LeBron James & Co. to glory? That’s been the only question thrown at him with multiple variations. In addition, veteran NBA analyst Andy Kamenetzky dropped a stinging proposal to Redick for a singular reason.

The Lakers are undoubtedly at a crucial juncture in their franchise’s history. With King James, almost reaching the final few years of his career, the team has to look for the next superstar. Importantly, the team is coming off a disappointing campaign in the 2024 postseason. Amid this situation, a team would generally opt for an experienced coach (Dan Hurley) to take over the proceeding. However, the Lakeshow has decided to rest their faith in a rookie.

Despite the Lakers’ bold move, many critics didn’t have any mercy. In the same vein, Kamenetzky joined the Locked on Lakers podcast to drop his version of JJ Redick slander. Immediately after praising the star coach for his “command of the language” and “command of the room”, he pointed out Redick’s inexperience in his own coaching unit.

Kamenetzky continued, “there is an element of if say Nate McMillan or Scott Brooks had been hired to coach this team you would not expect them to be attending coaching 101 you might need JJ Redick to go to coaching 101.” The veteran analyst opined that Redick would require a crash course before set his foot on the floor, for one particular reason, which is the coach’s inexperience compared to McMillan and Brooks.

JJ Redick and the chronicles of Lakers’ coaching job

After Dan Hurley’s fallback, Redick eventually managed to enter the Lakers fold. But the important announcement came along with an update. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski’s post read, “Rob Pelinka offered job this morning and Redick’s started working on a staff to surround himself with experience.”

So, if not for Nate McMillan and Scott Brooks, Redick would’ve eventually surrounded himself with other experience. Both coaches have over 20 years of experience in the NBA world, coaching for various teams like Atlanta Hawks, Indiana Pacers, Portland Trail Blazers, and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Moreover, it’s not just the analysts who went after Redick for his coaching inexperience, but also a renowned college coach, Mike Krzyzewski A. K. A Coach K. Speaking of the Lakers’ hire, Coach K said, “What they say doesn’t make a damn bit of a difference. To think any organization would hire anybody because of glamour is ridiculous.” However, on the other end, Redick has also come prepared for the slander that he has to face.

Speaking at the Lakers’ introductory press meet, Redick had a clear-cut message to his naysayers. He said, ” I really don’t give a fu*k. Like honestly, I want to coach the Lakers. I want to coach the team. I don’t want to dispel anything. I don’t. I want to become a great coach in the NBA, and I want to win championships. And I want my players to maximize their careers. That’s all I f—ing care about.” Will Redick prove everyone wrong in his very first season? Let us know in the comments.
