Is resting Bronny James a smart move, or are the Lakers being overly cautious?

The Los Angeles Lakers had a decent run at the Summer League this year. This included Bronny James and Dalton Knecht making a considerable run in the last two games, however, it wasn’t enough to qualify for the playoffs. Now, in the Summer League, the top four teams qualify for the playoffs wherein they play a knockout round. Out of all the teams, the 26 squads that don’t make the playoffs play a fifth game, also known as the Consolation game. The Lakers are 2-2, being 21st in the standings.

However, Bronny James, Maxwell Lewis, and Dalton Knecht won’t be playing the last game in Vegas against the Bulls tonight. Why is that? Well, the team’s medical decision comes after the number of practices and games the two have played since the start of the California Classic. Bronny had a great run in the previous two games despite not meeting the expectations in the Summer League opener. But then again, as soon as he got used to the pace, Bronny was well off.

At this point, the teenager has quite some time to work on his game before the regular season tips off in the fall. Knecht on the other hand is also a valuable asset to the Lakers and he has definitely proven his worth in the Summer League. It is only fair to give the boys a little rest before they head into practice yet again ahead of the next season. In his last game against the Cavs, Bronny put up 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists while shooting 50% from the field.

It seems that he’s slowly learning to execute his abilities, but with time, Bronny will definitely have a lot of experience, hence solidifying his talents on the floor. On the other hand, he also has quite some guidance on his way. He’ll be playing around with his father and head coach JJ Redick along with other veterans. Of course, he has the right circle to start from. Though it is on him to execute what he can, once he’s experienced enough.

Redick made it clear that the teen is a player under development. And there couldn’t have been a better explanation. Bronny has only played a year at the collegiate level and his performance wasn’t exactly attractive. But he’s a quick learner and can make his way around the game once given the opportunity. And yes, he isn’t the only rookie on the squad. So growing alongside someone from his class is also a considerable way to learn the game at the highest level.
