The newly formed Mavericks team is not taking it easy this offseason. Coming off a Finals loss, the Mavericks have enough fuel to fire the motivation heading toward the next season. This time around, Luka Doncic will have yet another All-Star to feed the ball to in the wing. That’s right, Klay Thompson‘s addition has been Dallas’ highlight this offseason. On the other hand, the star guard, Kyrie Irving recently underwent surgery on his broken left hand. Still, the spirits of this squad are quite high.
As they await their official training camp, quite a few of the players have already started to hit the gym. According to Marc Stein, the Mavericks were seen working out in Los Angeles. Klay Thompson was also one of the players putting in the work. However, just a month after his surgery, Irving was also in attendance doing minimum work. Kyrie is not yet cleared to play five-on-five but is clear to attend the training camp that kicks off in October.
A number of Mavericks are practicing together in Los Angeles this week and league sources tell my podcast partner @ChrisBHaynes and me that Kyrie Irving has been in attendance even though he is not yet cleared to play 5-on-5. Irving had surgery in July to repair a broken hand.

Apart from Doncic, the other two All-Stars seem to be highly motivated for the upcoming season. Their recent Finals run was enough of a statement sent to all the Western teams. But then again, they will be tested even further come the 2025 postseason. While Irving looks ready to take on the challenge, it will be up to the main man himself. Luka Doncic, at the moment, is in the middle of a much-needed offseason. The Slovenian played over 100 games in less than a year.
But on the brighter side, watching Thompson and Irving putting in the work will definitely put a smile on fans’ faces. Irving has been a key player, averaging 25.6 points, 5 rebounds, and 5.2 assists while shooting over 49% from the field and 41% from three. This was by far the second-best season of his career in terms of consistency. Though as he heads towards the next season, will Kyrie play a diminished role with Thompson in the starting lineup?
Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson might make up for an entertaining duo
The two guards have battled at the highest level for years. During the Warriors and Cavs’ four straight Finals runs, Thompson was Irving’s primary defender. Of course, the splash brother knows what Uncle Drew can do with a basketball. However, the two will now play together on the floor. Thompson’s addition has added another outside scoring threat for the Mavs. With Doncic on top and Thompson and Irving at the wing, the Mavericks will be unstoppable on the offensive end.
What’s your perspective on:
Can Kyrie Irving's comeback be the game-changer the Mavericks desperately need this season?
Have an interesting take?
On the other hand, Thompson is also an excellent on-ball defender. He can guard the perimeter quite, taking the load off of Irving and Doncic. Also, with guys like Gafford, Derrick Jones, and Lively, the three All-Stars will have it easy working in the paint. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to watch this Mavericks team contend for the title next season.
