Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James recently shook the basketball world when he candidly discussed his feelings about a missed opportunity to reunite on the court with Kyrie Irving, the Dallas Mavericks’ star Guard. James sang words of praise about his former teammate and Irving gladly reciprocated his admiration.

In a recent interview, Kyrie Irving broke his silence about his complicated relationship with LeBron James, revealing details about their strained relationship on and off court and eventual reconciliation. “There’s a lot of gratitude there. Obviously, I’m in a different age and place in my life, so is he. We’ve both been able to mature and appreciate what we got the chance to accomplish. I think there were some things that got in the way of our relationship when I was younger,” Irving admitted. “Now that I’m able to vocalize how I feel as a man and be comfortable and stand on my square, my beliefs, where I’m coming from…our relationship is different because of that now.”

Their relationship was just as meaningful outside of basketball. Kyrie said, “Off the court, our families just meshing well. Definitely think about those times but now we’re here in the present. We’re able to reflect but also now I’m at this stage and able to use some of the formulas that I was taught from him some of the great teachers that have come before me.” Irving was very grateful for having a figure like LeBron to look up to in the league.

Their chemistry was phenomenal, they led the Cavs to their first championship in 2016. Kyrie said, “Definitely miss him. Playing out there, just making things easier…His leadership and my leadership styles mesh very well. I was learning a lot from him then and I’m appreciative of him for the rest of my life.”

Kyrie and LeBron’s complicated relationship has always been public knowledge. In fact, over the years, the two made their distaste for one another very evident. Here’s what you need to know.

Kyrie and LeBron were a sensational duo who led the Cavs to four consecutive finals appearances. In 2016, LeBron and Kyrie led the Cavs to their first Championship against the Golden State Warriors. LeBron received much of the credit, which overshadowed Kyrie’s significant contributions. After the 2017 finals loss, Kyrie requested to be traded. Rumors suggested that the player was tired of being in King James’ shadow and never even wanted the ex-Cavs star to come back. Even after he left, there were no signs of reconciliation.

Until the 2018-2019 season. Kyrie revealed that he had reached out to apologise to LeBron. “It was a big deal for me because I had to call Bron and tell him like, ‘I apologize for being that young player that wanted everything at his fingertips,'” Irving said in an attempt to acknowledge his shortcomings. “I wanted to be the guy who led us to championships. I wanted to be the leader. I wanted to be all that.”

Their now-mended relationship is testament to the growth that both of them have gone through. Despite the difficulties that once separated them, their reconciliation demonstrates their maturity and the enduring  respect they have for one another. Who knows? maybe the future might see a reunion of the duo.
