The Dallas Mavericks continue to be on a roll! After trailing behind the Timberwolves by an enormous gap during the first half of the recently concluded Game 2, the franchise could get the better of their rivals in the end by securing a score of 109-108. Lead scorers Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving came out on top during the same, dropping 32 and 20 points respectively to the overall score. Even though they now hold a 2-0 lead in this crucial Western Conference Finals, Kyrie Irving felt that his performance could have been better.

In the aftermath of the matchup, the crew over at TNT Sports interviewed the 32-year-old shooting guard . During the same, the interviewer, Allie LaForce, proceeded to ask whether the player would beat himself up over missing a couple of free throws during the game. It didn’t take long for Irving to respond in the affirmative. However, he also revealed that there would be one person who would be more ‘upset’ over the missed free throws than himself: his father, Drederick Irving.

“Dad, I’m Sorry,” said Irving. “I love you man…. Il make the next one”.

While maintaining an above average shooting shat during the game, Irving slipped when he ended up missing 3 of his 7 free throws. The same were awarded to him when the shooting guard/point guard was fouled by Rudy Gobert during the final 1:44 minutes. The free throws would have helped the franchise get over their 103-106 score. However, not only did Irving miss it, but Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards was able to compound them to give his team a 108-103 lead. It can be assumed that for those few seconds, Kyrie Irving was not being looked upon in a positive light by Dallas fans. Fortunately, the Mavericks recovered and the slipup lost its intensity in people’s minds.

Even though Irving admitted his mistake, it still didn’t stop his roster from roasting him. During a post-game huddle in the locker room, Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd joked about the incident by stating “Alright, free throws on three, let’s go!”.

Everyone around the room, including Irving, couldn’t help but let out a laugh.

The $33.6 billion fast food franchise has had a long-standing tradition that they chose to honour during basketball games. Whenever a player from a visiting team misses two free throws in a row, everyone in attendance in the arena would receive a free Chick-Fil-A sandwich. Houston Rockets center Boban Marjanovic won the hearts of LA fans almost a month ago when he intentionally missed two free throws during a game against the Clippers. While Irving’s missed free throws were not intentional, he was still happy that Timberwolves fans benefited from his slip-up.

“A lot of emotions going through my head” said Irving when describing his thoughts after failing to make the shots. “There was a brief moment of disappointment. The fans are going crazy, I think we got a free chicken, or something like that”.
