Sunday night was a shocker for Boston Celtics fans. The reigning champs looked anything but dominant, stumbling against the scorching 30-5 Oklahoma City Thunder. With their electric form, the Thunder once again proved why they’re serious title contenders this season. But let’s talk about Boston—a team that rarely disappoints. From head coach Joe Mazzulla to the ever-bold Jaylen Brown, and even Kristaps Porzingis, everyone agreed: it was a night to forget.
During the post-game presser, the 29-year-old Latvian center, Kristaps Porzingis answered some tough questions that came his way. One of the reporters wanted to know how the Celtics bear with a team like OKC that plays so fast and tries to force turnovers. “How did you guys want to play offensively in this one?” they wanted to know.
“I mean, like we played in the first half. We were fine I think once I turned up a little bit. In the second, we played stupid and we just gave some possessions away,” KP replied with blatant honesty. “And once you start giving up possessions like this is just downhill for us. The rest of the time was just battling uphill once they made that run.” The Celtics had a 10-point lead in the first half of the game, where they scored 65 points against Thunder’s 55. But, it didn’t take much time for the Western Conference leaders to turn the game in their favor in the second half.

As Kristaps Porzingis mentioned, his team kept giving up possession to the opponents. And only managed to have 17-point turnovers in the second half. There was a clear error in the spacing plans and none of the players including Jaylen Brown could utilize the gaps to score after the first 24 minutes of the game. Thus losing 105-92 at the Paycom Center on Sunday.
However, Porzingis’ teammate, the ever-fierce Jaylen Brown has some more points to add to the team’s loss. And it looks like the 28-year-old shooting guard is also holding the game officials accountable for Boston’s disappointing loss.
Kristaps Porzingis’ “cookies and cream” partner Jaylen Brown has a lot to say about the game officials
Do we need to say how unapologetically honest Jaylen Brown can be at times? Surely not. Therefore when he was asked if it was impatience or lack of focus in the game, JB explained what he thought was the cause (one of the causes) of their failure. Previously, Kristaps Porzingis and Co.’s boss, Joe Mazzulla emphasized the poor spacing and physicality his boys brought to the court on Sunday. But, that’s not all.

KP’s “cookies and cream” partner Jaylen Brown added: “It’s just a lack of poise. Seeing the game, seeing how the game is being called, seeing the adjustments, and being able to adjust quicker. I think in the first half we got to the line, we got free throws, we got what we wanted.” Speaking of free throws, the Celtics had 87.5 FT% compared to OKC’s 84.6%. But, then, things didn’t turn out well for the C’s.
Moreover, JB felt that the NBA referees should also be held accountable. Thus he commented: “In the second half, we didn’t get to the line. They weren’t calling those touches, they were up the level of pressure and we weren’t. The whistle wasn’t on our side so it’s fine we just got to be able to adjust faster.” Two best teams in the league and lacking officiating in the game gave us Sunday’s matchup.
The NBA revealed its officiating crew for the big game, and guess who’s in charge? Scott Foster is the man who never fails to steal the spotlight—whether fans like it or not. The crowd’s reaction? A symphony of boos, as reported by Clemente Almanza. Love him or hate him, Scott Foster’s whistle has a way of keeping everyone on edge. And well, nothing much changed in Sunday’s game, as the Celtics fell prey to the whistles.

But honestly speaking, can the officiating be a major reason behind the loss? Of course not. Well, players like Kristaps Porzingis, Jaylen Brown, and even Coach Mazzulla are talking about the flaws the team showed on the court. Therefore, before Tuesday’s game vs. the Denver Nuggets, the Boston Celtics need to repair and prepare themselves for a comeback.
