Is Julius Randle right to call out Jalen Brunson, or is he overreacting? Let's hear it!

Jalen Brunson undoubtedly made the case for the best point guard in the East during the playoffs, don’t you think? The 6’2″ point guard averaged 32.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 7.5 assists while shooting over 44% from the field. Now, Brunson was all over the floor versus the Sixers in the first round. However, when the Knicks faced the Pacers, Brunson’s talents were extremely tested. Nevertheless, JB can pretty much score from anywhere on the floor. He’s a solid three-point shooter, an elite scorer, and has a smooth, pure jumper. However, unlike some of the undersized guards, Brunson isn’t as athletic as others, or is he?

Well, JB can throw down a one-handed slam when given space in transition. But the guard has struggled to showcase anything particularly flashy or unique. However, fans might be shocked to discover Brunson’s true athleticism after Josh Hart‘s recent Instagram story. Hart posted an old video of Jalen Brunson pulling off a windmill dunk during practice. He said: “Where this bounce go @jalenbrunson1” had fans in awe. As surprising as the dunk was, Brunson’s teammate could not believe the video was real.

Last year, Julius Randle was shocked to know that Brunson could dunk. “He said he dunked. I did not see it though. Did he really? Bull****. Wow, I got to look at the tape now, I don’t believe it. I don’t know what he was talking about though. He was like ‘I had to dunk that for you after you dove like that. I’m like bro you did not dunk, you laid that up,” Randle said. This happened in a game against the Nuggets during the 2022-23 season. Randle forced a steal near the three-point line, leading to a scramble that resulted in a fumble beyond half court. As Randle dived for the ball, he managed to pass it to Brunson running upcourt, who finished the play with a one-handed slam.

However, Randle didn’t even look back at the basket as Brunson threw it down. Confident that two points were in the bag, Randle ran back on defense. Regardless, if Randle had seen Hart’s story, he wouldn’t have believed it anyway. Now, Brunson is an underrated player when it comes to athleticism. Of course, on the court, Brunson’s athleticism may not be his strongest attribute. But it might just be his hidden trait. During the Draft Combine, Brunson recorded a 29-inch standing vertical leap and a 37-inch max vertical leap!

Brunson also recorded a 10.59 lane agility time. The guard is indeed quite athletic but doesn’t seem to implement it as often on the floor. At the end of the day, Brunson’s game is pretty well-balanced and the 28-year-old never fails to impress. However, as the next season approaches, Brunson’s responsibilities on the court become much more crucial.

Have an interesting take?

Jalen Brunson and the Knicks have a lot to look forward to

With the addition of Mikal Bridges, the Knicks have solidified their roster, adding more depth to the lineup. Brunson, on the other hand, will be the ship’s captain, the very savior of the Knicks after Carmelo Anthony‘s run in New York. The Knicks fell short in the second round after a condensed seven-game series against the Pacers. They could’ve made it to the Conference Finals, but couldn’t stand the fast-paced offense of Indiana.

Though this upcoming season will be crucial for the Knicks as they look to make a deeper playoff run. New York is one of the projected three-toppers of the East including the Celtics and the Sixers. They’ve made the case for being the title contenders and with their current roster in place, they have a great chance to make a Finals run. It will be interesting to see Brunson go off next season along with yet another of his Villanova teammates, Mikal Bridges.
