Can Walker Kessler be the game-changer the Knicks need to outshine the Lakers this season?

Will the Knicks’ plan lead Rob Pelinka to another failed pursuit? The regular season is not too far away, but the Lakers seem to have made no progress in adding a piece to the roster. While most established stars have already picked their destination, there have been rumors about Pelinka possibly making a trade for 7-foot Center Walker Kessler. However, that dream might also end in disappointment as the latest reports suggest James Dolan could beat the Lakers in the big man’s pursuit, hoping to solve the Knicks’ biggest problem.

As per media veteran Eric Pincus, the Knicks have discussed a trade involving Kessler with the Utah Jazz. However, the conversation was later stalled. But it shows that Dolan might be interested in the Center following the departure of Isaiah Hartenstein. Amid an injury-riddled season, Hartenstein stood like a rock for the Knicks and protected the paint, averaging nearly eight rebounds and one block during the playoffs. More importantly, he was available for most of the year playing 75 regular season games and 13 playoff games. Losing him to the Thunder was a big blow for Jalen Brunson and Co.

But that void can be filled if the Knicks get their hands on an elite shot blocker like Walker Kessler. In just two years, he has proven his worth to the league. This past season, the big man averaged 8.1 points and over seven rebounds. But his biggest asset was paint protection as he got 2.4 blocks on a nightly basis.

Moreover, the length might be the Knicks’ only weakness now that they have added Mikal Bridges to an already-stacked roster. But with Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson coming off major injuries, adding Kessler would give them the defensive presence they need. Maybe that’s why Lakers Nation also wants Pelinka to add Kessler even though he is not a big-name star.

Walker Kessler could help the Lakers solve a major concern

Similar to the Knicks, Rob Pelinka’s crew also has some things to figure out. At this point, it’s no secret that Anthony Davis prefers playing at the Power Forward position over being a Center. That’s where he thrives the most. But for most of his Lakers’ tenure, he has been forced to play at the five-spot because the team lacks a dominant big man. Sure, Pelinka has tried his best to make life easy for AD by adding big men like Christian Wood in the past. But there is still the need for a pure Center. A successful Walker Kessler pursuit could fulfill that need.

Have an interesting take?

With the addition of Kessler, the Lakers will have a permanent shot blocker to protect the paint at all times. As a result, Davis would get more freedom to spread the floor and even go all out on the offensive end. Not only could it bring out a better performance from him, but the move might keep Davis away from any possible injuries due to the shared responsibility with Kessler. However, with multiple suitors eyeing the 23-year-old, Pelinka would need a miracle to pair Walker alongside LeBron and AD. Do you believe he can pull it off or will James Dolan shatter his hope?
