Will Marcus Smart be the missing piece for the Knicks, or just another Dolan gamble?

The Knicks are leaving no stone unturned. NY stunned everyone when they made the blockbuster trade to add Karl-Anthony Towns. Sure, they had to let go of Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo in the process, but the move might have taken them a step closer to their title aspirations. However, as it turns out, they are not done trying to upgrade their team just yet as owner James Dolan is reportedly eyeing another star player to bolster the defense.

It’s none other than Memphis Grizzlies guard Marcus Smart! As per the latest report, the Knicks have had internal discussions about a potential deal for Smart. And this is not the first time they have shown interest in the former DPOY. While there is still uncertainty around what the future holds for Smart, the report indicates that the Knicks are willing to chase another star in the market.

Amid the rumors, Smart has already begun preparing for his second season in Memphis. More so because he played only 20 games in his debut season with the Grizzlies because of a finger injury he suffered during a game. And now that he has fully recovered, Smart has high expectations going into this season. “First of all, I gotta stay healthy. For me, just coming in and be me. I didn’t get that opportunity last year… That’s impact winning every way that I can.”

But he might have to do that with a different team if Dolan follows through on his rumored pursuit and makes an undeniable offer to the Grizzlies. As of now, Smart has two years and over $41 million left on his current contract and the Knicks will need to give up some major assets to make room for his salary. But they might not hesitate to do so considering what Smart brings to the table.

With Donte DiVincenzo gone, the Knicks are left with a void at the two spot. And Smart could be the perfect upgrade for them. Yes, he was injured for most of last season, but he averaged 14.5 points and over four assists when he was available. Moreover, before moving to Memphis, Smart spent most of his career in Boston and helped them reach the Conference Finals multiple times. And the Knicks could use that playoff experience after they fell short of making it to the top last season.

Yes, Marcus is not as good a shooter as Donte and has a career efficiency of only 32.3% from deep range. However, he makes up for his lack of shooting with his elite defense. Somewhat similar to Jrue Holiday, Marcus can lockdown any superstar and averages 1.6 steals in his career. Sure enough, he even bagged the DPOY trophy two years ago, becoming the first guard to win the award since Gary Payton did it in 1996.

More importantly, he is craving to return to the court after an injury-riddled season and prove his mettle, “I’m more about showing. I’m more about going on the court and letting my game do the talking for me. I think that’s gonna be key.” Surely, his addition will help Jalen Brunson and Co. make some noise in the playoffs. Do you think the Knicks should pursue Marcus Smart?
