It seems like the New York Knicks have come a long way since their 2018-19 season troubles of finishing 15th under David Fizdale. They now got a solid core with guard Jalen Brunson leading the way. Sitting 3rd in the East, they’re in one of their strongest positions in years as they chase their elusive third championship. But coach Tom Thibodeau’s news about center Ariel Hukporti’s injury seems to have put a dent in those hopes.
In their recent 110-105 win against the 76ers, Hukporti was given a chance in the 5 due to injuries to Mitchell Robinson and Karl Anthony-Towns. But after a solid 8-point display in 16 minutes, he was seen exiting early in the fourth quarter with what seemed to be a knee sprain. Turns out he tore the meniscus in his left knee. This is a huge blow to the Knicks, as this leaves their defense wide open. They already have the 20th-ranked defense in the league, and it seems that the going will get tough before it gets better as Hukporti is estimated to spend at least 4-6 weeks on the sidelines.
But Bobby Marks of the ESPN bears good news for the MSG residents. It seems that they have an open spot in their roster starting 28th February, and could be looking into the trade market for a player on a rest of the season contract.

Naturally, speculation is swirling like a Black Friday sale, with two names leading the rumor mill. The first on the list is 31-year-old TJ Warren. Ever since his release from the Timberwolves, he’s signed with the Knicks‘ G League affiliates, Westchester Knicks. A seasoned veteran, he’s trained with the main roster since the fall and will fit into Thibs’ squad easily. He’s averaging 24.9 PPG, 6.3 RPG, and 3.7 APG for Westchester and will be an invaluable addition to New York’s finest.
Next in line is American-Ivorian center Mo Bamba. The 26-year-old was recently traded to the Utah Jazz after signing for the Clippers earlier this season, but was waived a day later. His defensive and offensive capabilities will fill the gaping hole left by Hukporti, and give Thibs some extra depth and rotation options for the backend of the season. Even with Mitchell Robinson nearing a return, Thibs could still use Bamba for additional depth and flexibility.

Mitchell Robinson rumoured to return for the Knicks
Let’s travel back in time to the 2024 post season. The New York Knicks lost the Eastern Conference semis vs the Pacers, and Thibs is prepping for the season ahead with the hopes of some tangible progression. But then comes Mitchell Robinson’s injury when he needed it the least. A knock to his left ankle required him to undergo surgery, placing him on the sidelines indefinitely. But that seems like old news, as the 26-year-old could soon make his return for them.
Coach Thibs has told reporters about the progress he’s made after taking part in contact scrimmages. “He did everything today. He was active, very active.” But he’s cautious about it, adding that his integration into the squad will take place according to his body’s reactions and responses. He’ll most likely get his first game of the season against the Grizzlies on Friday or against the Heat on Sunday.

Robinson is known for his offensive rebounding and brutal physicality, something the Knicks have been missing this season. His addition to the team will most likely shift Karl Anthony-Towns to the power forward position, introducing some flexibility and versatility in the lineup. They’ll need him to be in top form if they intend to win it all this season.

Mitchell Robinson’s return coincides perfectly with Ariel Hukporti’s lengthy spell on the sidelines. But they won’t stand still in the face of adversity—they’re still looking to add a 15th player to their roster, with TJ Warren and Mo Bamba on top of the list.
