Earlier, Mychal Thompson, the former Laker and radio color commentator, expressed himself after his son chose the Mavs over his hometown team. Klay Thompson grew up as a Lakers fan, watching legends like Kobe Bryant. However, when it came down to one of two destinations, the Sea Captain chose the Mavericks. Why so? Well, there were a lot of reasons, though later the elder Thompson revealed that Klay’s decision was more inclined towards playing alongside Kyrie and Luka rather than avoiding Californian taxes.
However, in an interview earlier than that one, he had also admitted “hoping and praying he’d (Luka) finish his career with the Lakers.” Of course, he wanted his son to become a Laker. But then again, he also understood that his son was only choosing what he thinks is best for himself. Though it’s been a week and surprisingly, Mychal seems to have gotten over being upset.
During the introductory press conference, Klay Thompson gave an update on his dad’s thoughts, watching him wear a Mavs jersey. “He’s actually really excited for me. He thinks we have a great shot to do something special, not just this year but for many years.”

“He was all on board when the dust settled and he realized it was really a match made in heaven, “ said Klay. And why not? Having Thompson, Irving, and Doncic, who was his 2011 draft classmate, on the same roster surely seems like the best match any player can aspire to have. Everyone is aware of the history between Klay and Kyrie, battling in three consecutive Finals series in recent years.
Thompson would be his primary defender and knew how big a task guarding Uncle Drew was. On the other hand, Mychal does understand that the Mavs can become quite a successful and regular title contender if they manage to maintain this trio.

The most recent trip to the Finals was one of their most notable postseason journeys, even though they fumbled at the very last hurdle, failing to retain their title. Going up against PG13 and the Clippers, getting past the first-seeded Thunder, and gentlemanly sweeping the Wolves. It was a tough road, but Kyrie and Luka led the squad past each bump. With the addition of Klay Thompson, the Mavs have now fully solidified that roster. What’s more interesting is that they now have a player who needs and wants to return to the top.

Klay Thompson is looking to get back in the Finals
Well, if we ignore the seasons he wasn’t available because of injury, Thompson made six consecutive Finals appearances (last season being a play-in finish). During his 13-year tenure in the Bay Area, he won four titles along the way and earned the title of ‘Game 6 Klay’. The shooting guard knows how to play in the postseason. Despite his recent struggles, he is still a threat from deep and a fabulous defensive player. He is committed to making his Finals comeback, as fans might just watch him make his seventh appearance with the Mavs!
“I’m just excited. I still think I can do what I’ve been able to do, and it’s just about being in the best shape I could possibly be, but I know I can help this team, whether it’s the knowledge I’ve gained or big scoring nights. I just still know I can be a very, very good player in this league,” the sharpshooter said during his introductory presser.
It will be interesting to watch Luka, Klay, and Kyrie share the court. We all witnessed Luka struggle in the Finals, taking as many shots as he could. Now that they have the former Warrior, Doncic can take it easy from beyond the arc, feeding to the Splash Brother to get the job done from deep.
The newly-introduced Maverick will wear the No. 31 jersey, the same number Reggie Miller once sported. Interestingly, Thompson has mentioned in the past that the NBA legend is his childhood inspiration and he needs only 80 3-pointers to pass Miller and go 5th!
