The transpiring tale in Dallas since the Luka Doncic trade has been nothing short of nightmare fuel. Visualizing a recent air shot of the city covered in dust from the west gives an eerie feeling hard to shake off. It’s like the wrath of Gods has been unleashed upon Dallas and the Mavericks are right at the center of the dusty yellow film. Hearts were broken, promises unkept, but life must go on for the franchise and especially for Klay Thompson, who envisioned something far from the dire straits. With Doncic gone, Anthony Davis injured and Kyrie following suit, the former Splash brother is in a tough spot, gritting his teeth for a miracle run to qualify for the playoffs. But how exactly is he feeling? The picture was painted clear when Klay’s thoughts were peered through his dad’s lenses.
Mychal Thompson was vocal during his son’s move to Texas. The former NBA champion wanted his son to move to the Lakers, but his voice was not loud enough to dissuade Klay from the dream of teaming up with Doncic. What he thought would help him complete the ring collection for one hand turned out to be a disaster so far. So when Mychal was asked how his son was feeling after the Irving injury, he unbottled the untold words.
“He thought with Luka and Kyrie that he had a chance to get back to the finals,” Mychal said Mason & Ireland. “Obviously, Luka left. When I told him, well AD is coming, you still have a chance to get to the finals because AD is that good, then he’s hurt. And then Gafford got hurt. Then Lively got hurt.” Apart from them, Kai Jones, Dante Exum, Caleb Martin, and PJ Washington are on the injured list and, most recently, Jaden Hardy also joined them. Talk about bad luck, here’s another — Caleb Martin was another trade made by Nico Marrison in February. Quentin Grimes, who has gone the other way to Philly since then, is on a hot streak of his own. “So, yeah, Klay is stuck in purgatory right now,” Thompson Sr added.

But Mychal had other thoughts about it and rang the warning bells. “If they hang on to the tenth seed, that will be the story of the year in the NBA because I think they’re gonna lose 10 in a row. If you get the two other bigs back, you got a chance To at least To what? Get to the first round and to try to get out of it. But without Kyrie, they could forget about going to the finals,” Klay’s father warned. And number 31 of the Mavs also did not shy away from confessing the troubling times in Dallas.

Klay Thompson has a heartbreaking confession after Kyrie’s injury
Without Kyrie Irving, it’s going to be bad. Everyone knew that. But the blowout loss in Milwaukee showed just how bad it can still get for them. Klay’s 28-points were far from enough as it fell 2 short of the losing margin of 30. After the game, a dejected Klay was asked about what Kyrie’s absence meant to the team and the guard did not hold back.
“I may not talk too much, but that was really a gut punch,” the 30-year-old said. Stating it was a loss not only for the Mavs but also for the global audience, Klay continued, “Kyrie has been our rock this year, and it’s like an unfillable void he needs. So we gotta rally around him, and we gotta play hard for him. And, yeah that one hurt, though. Seeing him go down like that really sucked.”

Is Klay Thompson's move to Dallas turning into the biggest regret of his career?

With 19 games remaining, the Mavs are heading into a run of fixtures against teams in a similar situation. The Suns are in a mess and are 2.5 games behind Klay’s team. These two teams will face off next Sunday and by then it could turn into a winner takes all scenario.

If the Mavs come out on the wrong end of the result, leading to finishing outside the play-in spots, shouts of trading Anthony Davis could get louder. Klay Thompson could be a boat lover but it’s hard to fault him if he also tries to escape the sinking ship.
