Can the Warriors survive without Klay Thompson, or is this the end of an era?

Despite an upsetting NBA finish, the summer might have belonged to Stephen Curry. The Golden State Warriors talisman had an unforgettable debut Olympic experience. His performances during the clinching moments still echoing in the Team USA contingent. Furthermore, his undying loyalty to the Bay came through with his recent extension, and he spoke about it all in his appearance on the TODAY show. It also came with a surprise.

Before speaking to the hosts, the four-time NBA champion got an opportunity to take a picture with some lucky kids. After he finished, he discreetly took out the coveted Paris gold badge from his pockets. Likewise, the children present let out a loud gush of wonderment looking at the medal. However, that wasn’t all the things on his agenda.

After the brief stunner for the children, he moved his attention to more pressing matters. Following his $62.6 million extension, there was only one thought in everyone’s mind. Was it an indication that he would retire a Warrior, cementing a career-long legacy with the franchise? While he didn’t confirm anything, Stephen Curry did say it is his wish to do so.

“I hope so for sure. I mean I have been there going into my 16th year. And I’ve always said it’s a goal of mine to finish my career with that organization that see me go through the ranks and accomplish a myriad of things with Draymond. I know that Klay is not with us anymore but I want to keep winning obviously. Hopefully, we have some days of still doing that,” he said on the show.

Those are the same sentiments Curry has professed over the past few months. Through his time with the Warriors, the franchise has shown immense trust in him. Even though his early years were haunted by ankle ailments, the Warriors never stopped confiding in him. It’s only right that he repays them with the same generosity.

The only sorrow is he doesn’t get to do it in the way he wanted. Besides his ‘Splash Brother’ Klay Thompson.

Klay Thompson never wanted to leave Stephen Curry’s side

Even months after the news, the name of Klay Thompson can’t leave Curry’s thoughts. They shared a pristine bond for 13 years, winning titles and achieving various accolades together. As a tandem, they looked destined for immortality. And it wasn’t just Curry who wanted it to be so. Though Thompson claimed it was a necessary break up, years ago he told his father, Michael Thompson about wanting to stay by Curry till the end of his career.

“He said it to me in private. He loves playing with Steph. He wants to retire a Warrior and not in another 10 years. He wants to go into the Hall of Fame along with Steph. That’s how close he feels to him and how honored he is to play with him,” said the former Laker on the Raising Fame podcast.

Those thoughts must have crossed through Thompson when making a decision. But given how injuries had derailed his rank within the Warriors and his own peace of mind, he decided it was time to move on. And after first finding it difficult, Curry too seems to be accepting the new-looking reality.

Th era of the Splash Brothers though over, will remain etched in Warriors’ history forever. And who knows, maybe they will get into the HOF together.
