“That type of consistency and dedication to the game, only the greats have that in him and, you know, he is obviously one of the best to ever do it,” said Klay Thompson back in February 2022, about LeBron James. The then-Warriors player gave out his appreciation after LeBron made history by breaking Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record and becoming the All-Time Scoring Leader! From that date till now, the 40-year-old has only added to his record, currently holding a whopping 41,261 points. The number is so astronomical that even as Klay Thompson reached his milestone in the scoring total, he couldn’t help but feel intimidated by it.
The now Dallas Mavericks player, and his squad, recently went up against the Denver Nuggets. By adding 25 points during his 35 minutes on the court, Klay Thompson created history by taking his All-Time Scoring record all the way up to 16,013 points.
Along with crossing the 16K milestone, Thompson now ranks 123 on the All-Time Scoring List. He is placed right between Jrue Holiday (16127 points), and Derek Harper (16006 points). When the time came for Thompson to discuss his achievement, however, he ended up downplaying it. How?

He went on to state, “It’s cool, but it makes you realize how ridiculous it is that LeBron has 40,000. Ridiculous. That’s insane.” Either Thompson is trying to adopt a Harvey Specter-like attitude, or LeBron’s record is intimidating.
Klay Thompson on reaching 16,000 career points:

With star player Luka Doncic being sidelined due to an injury, the franchise hasn’t been able to perform at its best over the last few weeks. The same was seen against Nikola Jokić and Co. too, as the Nuggets won the game by a 112-101 score. Despite the loss, the night was special for Klay Thompson, no matter if he felt intimidated by it.
At the same time, no one can blame him for feeling the way he did. After all, it took him around 14 years to simply cross the 16,000 points mark. Even if the Lakers star stopped adding to his record today, it would still take Thompson around 2 decades to reach LeBron’s 41,261 points, if he continues scoring at the same rate as earlier. Since he is already 34 years of age, the most that Thompson can now give to the NBA, as a player, is an additional 8 years.
The moral of the story here is that LeBron James’ record is simply untouchable. Not just by Klay Thompson, but by several of his peers. It is a truth that fans did not hesitate to remind others on social media.
X Users give their support to Klay Thompson’s praise of LeBron James: “No one will ever beat”
One social media user highlighted his agreement with Klay Thompson’s stance. He did so by writing “No one will ever beat lebron james record of 40k pts”.

Well, “no one” can sometimes be a bit of an exaggeration. After all, people would have said the same about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record, something that even Michael Jordan could not surpass. However, experts can say that LeBron’s record will not be broken for at least another couple of decades. After all, there are only 5 other active players in the Top 30 All-Scoring List. Kevin Durant leads the others with his 29,631 points, and James Harden is next with 26,634 points. While the other veterans may have given up on breaking the record that LeBron continues to add on to even today, the next generation of players may have better luck.
One individual referenced Thompson by writing “He really said “How does this effect Lebrons legacy””.
As famous as the Michael Jordan crying meme and the Shaq Shimmy, the “How Does This Affect LeBron’s Legacy?” comment can be found in several social media forums. They may not even have anything to do about the NBA, which is the beauty of the comment. However, it fit appropriately in Klay Thompson’s case, as he couldn’t even enjoy his milestone to the fullest without thinking about LeBron James’ NBA impact.

One social media user wrote “Best part is he will end up with 42000 points.”
Currently at 41,261 points, the All-Time Scorer may reach the 42K pinnacle by the end of the 2025-26 season, or even before that. Since his contract is active till the 2025-26 season, nothing on that end would stop him from playing. However, given his advanced age, the 40-year-old may choose to quit beforehand. Fortunately, LeBron has yet to make a statement that indicates his retirement being anytime close.
One individual wrote “Unbreakable record. Not in our lifetime guaranteed.” Once again, not impossible, but tough to break LeBron James’ record. The user who highlighted the video also wrote “INSANE STAT: LeBron had 17,362 points before Klay Thompson ever stepped foot on an NBA court.”

LeBron James started his NBA career in 2003, while the team drafted Thompson back in 2011. This means that LeBron James had already made more points than Klay Thompson within 8 years of his career! Yikes!
Overall, the majority of reactions highlighted an agreement with Klay Thompson’s stance. It is ‘ridiculous’ to have that many points. However, even recording the 16,000+ points like Klay Thompson is also no mere feat. Therefore, the Dallas Mavericks star should celebrate this milestone in a manner that it deserves to be.
